We have a vacancy for a well qualified researcher to work on eastern
Indonesian (the region from Sulawesi and Nusa Tenggara to Irian
Jaya/West Papua) and East Timorese linguistics.  You will have a PhD
or equivalent qualifications in linguistics, a good publications
record and field experience in the region.  With your colleagues you
will contribute to the Department's program of field research on the
Austronesian language family and to interdisciplinary studies of
language and society undertaken by members of the Division of Society
and Environment.

Appointment:  Fixed term contract for 5 years.  The position is
available from 6 January 2002.

Remuneration:  Upon appointment you will have a salary package in the
range of Aus$60,056-$70,858pa.  (Salary packages include salary and
generous superannuation provisions.  In addition there are
opportunities for external earnings and some scope for negotiated
arrangements within University policy.)

Department of Linguistics

The Department of Linguistics in the Research School for Pacific and
Asian Studies is a major centre for research on the indigenous
languages of the Pacific Islands and Island Southeast Asia. It offers
a PhD by thesis only. The research program is multi-faceted. An
emphasis on language description and fieldwork goes hand in hand with
a strong engagement with theoretical issues in the study of
discourse, grammar, lexicon and language change. Many of the theses
completed in the Department have been analytical grammars of
individual languages which at the same time address questions of
general interest. The Department has been a leader in research on the
history of the Austronesian and Papuan languages and in the study of
Pacific pidgins.

Within RSPAS, Linguistics belongs to the Division of Society of
Environment, together with the Departments of Anthropology, Human
Geography and the Contemporary China Centre. Close ties are
maintained with the School of Language Studies in the Faculty of
Arts, with whom PhD students are often jointly supervised under the
aegis of the Graduate Program in Linguistics. Although the Department
of Linguistics is a research-only department and thus offers no
undergraduate teaching of its own in linguistics, members of the
department contribute to the teaching of courses in the School of
Language Studies.
