[An-lang] Spam?

Dear Colleagues-- I just happened to look at the archive for Dec. 2003 and
noted that all but one message had subjects etc. in total gibberish (perhaps
Japanese or Chinese in unicode??), nor did I reconize any of the sender's
names or email addresses.  My ISP also sequestered a bunch of these in their
Spam Filter.  Is there a problem, or were these legitimate messages?
