Subject: SHLP Inaugural Conference, ANU, 1st August 2008

We propose to launch the SHLP with a one day conference, to be held on 1st August 2008 in the Department of Linguistics, RSPAS, ANU, Canberra, Australia.

Contributions are welcome on any topic in the history of linguistics in the Pacific in the hope of stimulating a diverse range of contributions. These could include (though they
are not restricted to) the following:

-- Missionary linguistics in the Pacific;
-- Explorer linguistics in the Pacific;
-- The rise and development of academic linguistics in the Pacific, and the relationships to international academic linguistics and other disciplines (e.g. anthropology);
-- The contribution of particular individuals, including both leaders and rank-and-file;
-- The history of treatment of particular linguistic themes (such as phonetics and phonology, morphology, semantics, sociolinguistics, discourse analysis);
-- The development of applied fields such as translation and interpreting, literacy teaching, and language maintenance;
-- The contribution of indigenous people;
-- The institutionalisation of linguistics in the Pacific (e.g. the role and contribution of SIL International, the rise of academic departments of anthropology and linguistics);
-- Interactions between description, documentation and theory (how linguists dealt with linguistic facts problematic to their linguistic theories, and the impact of theory on
descriptive and documentary practice);
-- Linguistics transplanted: the development of European and American linguistic theories and praxis in the Pacific;
-- Linguistics in the colonial and post-colonial Pacific.

Expressions of interest

If you would like to attend this conference and/or give a paper, please advise us at organisers_shlp at yahoo.com.au by 31st March 2008, indicating a
