Indonesian <ajak>, "wild dog"

I find the word <ajak> (usually rendered <adjag>) in 19th-century zoological sources for a kind of Javanese wild dog (a subspecies of the dhole, Cuon alpinus).  In the Stevens-Schmidgall dictionary of Indonesian, this word is cited as <ajak>, "wild forest dog," as an independent word and in the collocation <anjing ajak>.  This latter collocation is confirmed by the older sources, which have <andjingadjag>, as well as <assoo adjakh>.
I'm curious if <ajak> has some meaning other than "wild forest dog" that would explain its modifying words meaning "dog."  My sources on Indonesian, Javan languages, etc., are very limited.
