KA HO`OILINA: Puke Pai `̉lelo Hawai`i / THE LEGACY: Journal of Hawaiian Language Sources

Founded by Alu Like's Native Hawaiian Library, cosponsored by `Aha Punana Leo, `Ahahui `̉lelo Hawai`i, the Center for Hawaiian Studies at UH-Manoa, Ka Haka `Ula o Ke`elikolani (College of Hawaiian Language, UH-Hilo), among others, and guided by comprehensive editorial and archivist committees, this unique new resource aims to enhance the use and understanding of the Hawaiian language by publishing materials from Hawaiian language collections in Hawai`i.

By the 1850s, Hawaiians were among the most literate people in the world. For decades they printed many newspapers, books, journals, letters, government documents, and educational materials in Hawaiian. A large number of these are stored in various archives in Hawai`i and are often inaccessible; and in some cases, endangered. Taken together, this written legacy comprises one of the largest archives of any indigenous nation in the world.

Each issue of Ka Ho`oilina contains archival materials including: the Hawaiian Ethnological Notes from Bishop Museum compiled by Mary Kawena Pukui; government documents; Hawaiian-language newspapers; and cultural materials such as selected mele (songs and chants). These materials are first being published in print, and eventually will be available on the worldwide web <http:..hooilina.olelo.hawaii.edu> and through a compact disc recording of native Hawaiian speakers. The print version is laid out in four parallel columns: a copy of the original words of the Legacy piece; an updated version using modern Hawaiian orthography; an English translation; and annotations. The electronic version will include search capabilities.

Kalena Silva is professor and director of Ka Haka `Ula o Ke`elikolani (College of Hawaiian Language) at the University of Hawai`i at Hilo. Janet Zisk is the archivist for Na Kula `o Kamehameha (Kamehameha Schools).
