</style><b>Workshop on Argument Structure and Event Structure</b><br /><br />Date: 26 July 2013 (09:00-17:00)<br /><br />Venue: Hedley Bull 3 Australian National University<br /><br />Argument structure, a fundamental concept in modern linguistics, represents syntactically relevant information about arguments in relation to their head predicate. This includes information such as the arity/valence, transitivity and argument types (e.g., direct/core vs. obliques), and relative structural prominence of the predicate. While its precise conception and representation vary across theories, argument structure is part of the descriptive and analytical machinery that is used to capture both cross-linguistic and language-specific principles and mechanisms in argument expression. An example of this is voice alternations (active, passive, middle, etc.), which are highly constrained but mostly predictable.<br /><br />It has been also observed that certain properties of event structure such as aktionsart (characterized by event type features such as as stativity/durativity, telicity, and dynamicity) as well as an array of temporal perspectives (or viewpoint aspect) are also important in the grammar. These interact in a complex manner with the lexical predicate argument structure and the specific properties of individual arguments and clausal modifiers, possibly expressed showing the speaker’s event evaluation in a given context via the modal system.<br /><br />Languages differ in how the properties of argument structure and event structure are organized in their grammars, as well as in the morphosyntactic means available for constructing them.
