the morning of Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 2013 Howard Paul McKaughan,
founder of the Department of Linguistics at the University of Hawai'i, died
peacefully in his sleep at the age of 91. He will </span></font><font color="black" face="Arial"><span style="font-family:'Arial','sans-serif';color:windowtext;font-size:10pt">be best remembered
for his extensive work on Maranao of the southern
Philippines,</span></font><font color="black" face="Arial"><span style="font-family:'Arial','sans-serif';color:windowtext;font-size:10pt">although
he also did fieldwork in the eastern highlands of New Guinea, and more
recently on the immigrant Iranun communities of Sabah, north Borneo.
Professor McKaughan was known for his hearty, open personality which radiated
warmth and humor, and for the kindness he showed to those students who were
fortunate enough to work with him. After founding the Department of
Linguistics and overseeing the hire of key faculty members who laid the
foundations for its now famous tradition in Asian and Pacific linguistics,
</span></font><font color="black" face="Arial"><span style="font-family:'Arial','sans-serif';color:windowtext;font-size:10pt">much
of his career was spent in higher-level administration. Following his
retirement from the University of Hawai'i he continued to work for the Summer
Institute of Linguistics with the Iranun people of Sabah until declining health
forced this to end. Thankfully, while there was still time he
was honored with a festschrift in 2010 in which over 40 of his colleagues,
former colleagues, students and friends expressed their admiration for his
remarkable gifts as both a scholar and a human
