P. Francis Zewen died peacefully in his sleep.

We met over fifty years ago when he came to the Seminar für Indonesische und Südseesprachen in 1973. At that time he rescued me as I was the only student to endure the world´s most boring lectures by Hans Kähler. Francis joined us and asked all the questions that I had not dared to ask. So I did not quit, even though it meant sitting through 90 minutes in chalk dust and tobacco clouds produced by those two chain-smokers of Indonesian kretek and menthol cigarettes. Later on Francis kindly edited those lecture notes for the sake of his fellow students.

Before, Father Zewen had worked for the Catholic Church in the Marshall Islands. Then he took a break to write his doctoral dissertation at the Universität Hamburg (published in 1977, see below). He subsequently returned to the Pacific, but switched to another archipelago, the Marquesas. The outcome was another book, an Introduction to Marquesan in French. As a natural multilingual, probably like all the Luxembourgois, he also worked for the Pacific Council of Churches and visited almost every island in the Pacific.

He had such good memories of his time in Hamburg that he retired here and became an associate lecturer at the Seminar. He was also interested in Austronesian writing systems and developed computer fonts for them. Francis was lively and full of anecdotes. He was very popular with the students who never lost touch with him, even after graduating, esp. Kay Langenberg and Dorota Bytner who organised his funeral and found a new home for his grey cuckatoo.
