Subject: "Zelemy"

I have a quick question: when I lived in Jordan I learned the word "zelemy",
meaning "friend", "buddy", "chum", "pal", etc. I recently tried to find it
in Hans Wehr, but couldn't find a root that made sense (also taking into
account that a number of letters are commonly pronounced "z" in Jordan, such
as TH, DH, etc.) Can anyone tell me the root of this word?

Thank you.
