Subject: Sukuun in Quran Query

Dear collegues,

in the quasi-official Qur'aan-edition of al-Azhar the sign for sukuun is
different from that employed in ordinary texts. Its shape is rather
flat, it is open at the left side and has an edge at the right side. In
the appendix to the edition it is stated, that this sign is the head of
a small khaa' without dot. Graphically this makes perfectly sense, but
my problem is: Why is the letter khaa' used? What is the abbreviated
word? Any ideas?

Sincerely,
Stefan Weninger
