Subject: Gulf Arabic Syllabification Response

The majority of Arabic dialects including Gulf Arabic syllabify an
intervocalic biconsonantal cluster (VCCV) by assigning a coda position to
the first consonant (VC.CV). This is because a simple coda is favoured over
a complex onset. The question arises when such clusters occur in
word-initial position., e.g., briig 'jug' or Tbuul 'drums'. Based on my
readings, all Gulf dialects tolerate word-initial clusters of some sort,
except Iraqi which mandates epenthesis in such cases, e.g., 'ibriig and
'iTbuul.
