Subject:translation in the classroom query

Dear all,
Since most of the list members are either directly or indirectly
involved in foreign language teaching, I would like to ask them what
they think of using translation in thier classrooms. It seems to be  a
contentious issue!

Any refrences on the issue will be most appreciated.
