     ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF ARABIC & ISLAMIC STUDIES

The Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies in the School of
Arts and Sciences, University of Pennsylvania, anticipates making a
full-time, tenure-track appointment in the field of Arabic & Islamic
Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin in the Fall of
2003.  The position is intended for scholars whose primary focus is
on the pre-modern period of Arabic and Islamic civilization;
specializations in law, religion, and philosophy will be particularly
favored.  Prospective candidates must have obtained a Ph.D. degree by
August 2003 and have a firm and continuing commitment to both
teaching and research.  They should possess a native or near-native
competence in Arabic and a familiarity with the textual traditions of
pre-modern (and preferably modern) Arabic, and should also be
acquainted with the principles of language-pedagogy.  The teaching
obligations of the post will consist of offering four courses per
year at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, including
language courses, specialized classes based on texts in the original
language, and more generalized, survey courses.

   Review of applications will begin on November 15, 2002, and the
process will continue until the position is filled.
