University of Wisconsin-Madison
Summer Arabic Immersion Program
12 June–7 August 2004 (Madison, Wisconsin)
UW-Madison announces its first summer residential immersion program in
Arabic at both the elementary and intermediate levels—open to
undergraduates, graduate students, and professionals. In an effort to
create an environment conducive to the demands of an immersion course,
UW-Madison has chosen the campus of nearby Edgewood College, on
Madison’s Lake Wingra, as the site for the program. Participants will
agree to use Arabic exclusively throughout the entire eight-week
duration.
The program will feature a variety of out-of-class activities. Students
will take meals with their instructors, watch films with members of the
local Arab community, take field trips to cultural sites, and
participate in their choice of daily athletic and artistic activities
coordinated by Arabic-speaking staff.
This summer will offer two levels of Arabic study: elementary, or first
year Arabic, and intermediate, or second year Arabic. Those with no
background in Arabic study are encouraged to apply for the elementary
level, while those with one year of university-level Arabic study or
its equivalent are encouraged to apply at the intermediate level. Both
levels offer eight UW-Madison semester credits.
Admission to the program will be selective. Applicants will be accepted
on a rolling basis until the program is filled. It is anticipated that
26 applicants will be admitted for summer, 2004. Apply early for the
best chance of admission. See the program website for further details
and to download an application:
