The answer to the second question is no--it is not legal to make a  
sound recording of a book and sell it without permission from the  
copyright holder. The publisher of the book usually administers such  
subsidiary rights even if copyright is in the author's name (or that  
of another party), so you should contact the publisher if you want to  
pursue this.
