Subject:etymology of shiin 'ayn raa'

Dear colleagues,

Is there a scientific etymological explanation for why the root ش ع ر
(sh ‘ r) has two basic meanings (‘to know/feel’ and ‘hair’)?
Can we
trace back which one appeared first? Did anybody try in the past to
find any semantic relationship between both lexical meanings?

Any suggestion concerning books or articles on Arabic semantics
dealing with this kind of phenomena?

Thanks in advance for any help,

Laila Hasan Familiar
