This release represents a significant revision of LDC's previous ATB3 publications: Arabic Treebank: Part 3 v 1.0 LDC2004T11 and Arabic Treebank: Part 3 (full corpus) v 2.0 (MPG + Syntactic Analysis LDC2005T20. ATB3 v 3.2 contains a total of 339,710 tokens before clitics are split, and 402,291 tokens after clitics are separated for the treebank annotation. This release includes all files that were previously made available to the DARPA GALE program community (Arabic Treebank Part 3 - Version 3.1, LDC2008E22). A number of inconsistencies in the 3.1 release data have been corrected here. These include changes to certain POS tags with the resulting tree changes. As a result, additional clitics have been separated, and some previously incorrectly split tokens have now been merged. One file from ATB3 v 2.0, ANN20020715.0063, has been removed from this corpus as that text is an exact duplicate of another file in this release (ANN20020715.0018). This reduces the number of files from 600 files in ATB3 v 2.0 to 599 files in ATB 3 v 3.2. Arabic Treebank: Part 3 v 3.2 is distributed on one CD-ROM. 2010 Subscription Members will automatically receive two copies of this corpus. 2010 Standard Members may request a copy as part of their 16 free membership corpora. Non-members may license this data for US$4500. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Arabic-L: 07 Aug 2010 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Kirk Belnap" Subject:BYU Summer Arabic Program 2010 Summer Intensive Arabic Program Brigham Young University Brigham Young University (BYU) will offer first- and second-year intensive Arabic during its Summer term (June 21 - August 9). At BYU, we take an innovative approach to learning Arabic: students are exposed to the language as it is actually used in the Arab world. From the first day of class, students begin learning to speak Egyptian Arabic (the most widely understood Arabic dialect and one closely related to neighboring dialects such as urban Palestinian). Classes are highly interactive and one-on-one conversations with an Arab tutor, film evenings, soccer games, and cooking lessons are also an integral part of the experience. We are fortunate to have Ahmad Karout teaching our second-year program, which focuses on Modern Standard Arabic; however, students will continue to be exposed to Egyptian and Levantine Arabic in and outside of the classroom. Students enrolling in the second-year program should be comfortable with the skills, vocabulary, and structures taught up to and including lesson 15 in Al-Kitaab, vol. 1 (or the equivalent). Putting together a list of appropriate stimuli is very challenging, so I could use some help in thinking of words to use. I'd truly appreciate help from anyone familiar with Moroccan darija. I need sets of three words each, meeting the following criteria: -Words 1 and 2 must share the same root. -Words 1 and 3 must share 3 letters/sounds, but NOT the same root. A couple of examples : 1 2 3 khddiya khda dda tijara ttajr jar Right now I'm not being picky about any details other than that, since it is a challenge even to think of words meeting those two simple requirements. If anyone can help out by thinking of a few sets, that would be great. I am not a native speaker, and I'd never be able to come up with enough of them on my own. The new online material will also provide speech-language pathologists working with Arabic-speaking children with crucial resources that till now are lacking, to improve the quality of life of the children they work with and their families. Required qualifications include a PhD in First Language Acquisition, Speech-Language Pathology, or Psychology; IT proficiency; experience with Statistics; experience on a research team; experience in research project management; native competency in oral and written Arabic; and near-native competency in oral and written English. It's been puzzling me that in MSA and Egyptian Colloquial Arabic, in sentences with relative clauses that refer to the word مرة, sometimes no resumptive pronoun (عائد) is used to refer back to مرة. For example, in التيه, the first volume of the novel مدن الملح by عبد الرحمن منيف, the narrator says (pp. 128-129 in the 2008 edition): إنها المرة الأولى التي تبدو لهم الأماكن معادية . . . . وفي المرات القليلة التي حاولوا أن يتكلموا، أن يقولوا شيئاً، كان كلامهم قصيراً مبهماً. I would have expected this: إنها المرة الأولى التي تبدو لهم فيها الأماكن معادية . . . . وفي المرات القليلة التي حاولوا فيها أن يتكلموا، أن يقولوا شيئاً، كان كلامهم قصيراً مبهماً. Similarly, in Egyptian Colloquial Arabic, I often hear أول مرة أشوفه. instead of أول مرة أشوفه فيها. A search for المرة الأولى التي in the newspaper corpus on http://arabicorpus.byu.edu suggests that it is more common to use the resumptive pronoun, but there are also examples of sentences without it. Does anyone know why this is? I would be interested to hear the reactions of native speakers here: Do you feel that it sounds better or worse to include the resumptive pronoun in these sentences, or does it make no difference? Also, does this only happen with مرة, or are there other sorts of sentences where resumptive pronouns are not used in relative clauses, contrary to what we are taught? Is there something special about مرة? It is based on the hypothesis that the CNN as a news producer modifies the news content and presentation according to the audience it addresses. It is also assumed that, as the Web has actually become an important source of news, distinctive features of form and content are used, making web-news different from other traditional types of news and requiring different analytical tools. The research is interdisciplinary in nature. It is based mainly in the field of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), with insights from other disciplines, such as multimodal discourse analysis, functional linguistics and translation studies. The analysed data consisted of stories collected from both sites in Arabic and English during a one-month period, as well as a users' questionnaire distributed and collected online. For the purpose of triangulation, the analysis included multimodal, quantitative and qualitative analyses of the collected websites stories and the questionnaire data. The research concludes that the Web has become a major news source for many people; the written material is more dominant compared to other multimodal elements; the websites in question address each public using a completely different discourse, i.e. using texts with different linguistic, cultural and ideological implications; and that negative views are widespread concerning CNN's reporting, reliability and balance. It also emerges that news translation is rather a process of re-writing, providing totally new products depending on different ideological positions. Translation studies tools are not adequately designed for analysing this type of text production and discourse analysis scholars have concentrated more on monolingual texts than on cross-linguistic discourse. It is therefore considered desirable and advisable to conduct further research that looks into these questions and to develop a contrastive critical discourse analysis approach for investigating them. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Arabic-L: 29 May 2010 From dil at BYU.EDU Sat May 29 07:40:05 2010 From: dil at BYU.EDU (Dilworth Parkinson) Date: Sat, 29 May 2010 10:40:05 +0300 Subject: Arabic-L:LING:Dual in MSA refs needed Message-ID: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Arabic-L: Sat 29 May 2010 Moderator: Dilworth Parkinson [To post messages to the list, send them to arabic-l at byu.edu] [To unsubscribe, send message from same address you subscribed from to listserv at byu.edu with first line reading: unsubscribe arabic-l ] -------------------------Directory------------------------------------ 1) Subject:Dual in MSA refs needed -------------------------Messages----------------------------------- 1) Date: 29 May 2010 From:Mai Zaki Subject:Dual in MSA refs needed Hello all, Does anyone know of any reference that discusses the continuing decrease of using the dual forms in MSA and the reasons/alternatives for it? The American University in Cairo (AUC) was founded 90 years ago and is major contributor to the social, political and cultural life of the Arab Region. An independent, nonprofit, apolitical, non-sectarian and equal opportunity institution, AUC is fully accredited in Egypt and the United States. It is a vital bridge between East and West, linking Egypt and the region to the world through scholarly research, partnerships with academic and research institutions, and study abroad programs. The Hermann F. Eilts International Scholarship was named in tribute to Eilts, a former U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia and Egypt, and an AUC trustee. Through diplomacy and education, Eilts worked tirelessly to bridge political divides and increase cultural understanding between the United States and the Arab world. Scholarship awards may be applied to tuition, fees and on-campus housing. The scholarship is open to full-time undergraduate students currently enrolled in colleges and universities in the United States, who are already accepted to AUC?s study abroad program. Additionally, they must have a 3.5 cumulative GPA and will be required to register for at least one political science, Middle East studies or history course during each semester of attendance at AUC. To apply, students are asked to write a 1500 word essay on the following topic: ?How will my experience at The American University in Cairo impact my future career plans and broaden my appreciation of Arab culture?? The Simpson Scholarship in Egyptology is a $2500.00 award for one semester to be used toward tuition or living expenses. The scholarship is designed for students who wish to increase their knowledge and familiarity with ancient Egypt. Students must enroll in at least three Egyptology courses. To apply, please send a 1500 word essay on the topic, ?Why I want to study Egyptology at AUC? and include a reference to three Egyptology courses for which you wish to register. It's been puzzling me that in MSA and Egyptian Colloquial Arabic, in sentences with relative clauses that refer to the word ???, sometimes no resumptive pronoun (????) is used to refer back to ???. For example, in ?????, the first volume of the novel ??? ????? by ??? ?????? ????, the narrator says (pp. 128-129 in the 2008 edition): ???? ????? ?????? ???? ???? ??? ??????? ?????? . . . . ??? ?????? ??????? ???? ?????? ?? ???????? ?? ?????? ?????? ??? ?????? ?????? ??????. I would have expected this: ???? ????? ?????? ???? ???? ??? ???? ??????? ?????? . . . . ??? ?????? ??????? ???? ?????? ???? ?? ???????? ?? ?????? ?????? ??? ?????? ?????? ??????. Similarly, in Egyptian Colloquial Arabic, I often hear ??? ??? ?????. instead of ??? ??? ????? ????. A search for ????? ?????? ???? in the newspaper corpus on http://arabicorpus.byu.edu suggests that it is more common to use the resumptive pronoun, but there are also examples of sentences without it. Does anyone know why this is? I would be interested to hear the reactions of native speakers here: Do you feel that it sounds better or worse to include the resumptive pronoun in these sentences, or does it make no difference? Also, does this only happen with ???, or are there other sorts of sentences where resumptive pronouns are not used in relative clauses, contrary to what we are taught? Is there something special about ???? Elbadri Dissertation Title: News on the Web in Arabic and English: A discourse analysis of CNN's websites Linguistic Field(s): Discourse Analysis Subject Language(s): Arabic, Standard (arb) English (eng) Dissertation Director(s): Ruth Wodak Dissertation Abstract: This research consists of an analysis of the news presented by the CNN (Cable News Network) on its websites in Arabic and English.
