There is a quick discussion of the emergence and early function of Classical Arabic in Muhammad al-Sharkawi's "Pre-Islamic Arabic" in the Encyclopedia of Arabic Language and Linguistics 2008. The discussion is amplified in Muhammad al-Sharkawi's 2010 book called The Ecology of Arabic, Brill.
