Last February, graduate students from eighteen universities assembled to set the tone for Arabic studies in the twenty-first century. The overwhelming, positive feedback from this ‘new generation’ for Jīl Jadīd 2011 prompts us to assemble again in order to keep the conversation going. The purpose of this conference remains to bring together students spread across area studies, linguistics, comparative literature and other departments in order to facilitate a productive and interdisciplinary exchange of new ideas. At the center of the conference lies the goal of fostering productive and fruitful dialogue. Jīl Jadīd 2012 intends to continue exploring innovative approaches to presentations and the conference committee will decide the final format of the conference, to be announced when available. The conference will feature keynote speakers on Arabic literature and linguistics, as well as a career development workshop offered by faculty from the UT Department of Middle Eastern Studies. Topics: All papers on Arabic literature (classical and modern) and Arabic linguistics will gladly be considered. We especially encourage state of the field papers that provide a focused overview of a specific subfield of Arabic studies and suggest new avenues for research in that area. Submitters presenting papers on the ‘the state of the field’ will be asked to provide a bibliography in electronic formation two weeks prior to the conference. All other submitters, who are accepted, will not be asked to provide a summary of their papers this year. Applicants who will be outside of the US at the time of the conference are encouraged to submit, and will be able to present their papers and participate in discussions in person or via Internet video-chat. Papers that will be also presented at other conferences, such as ALS and ACLA, are welcome, as we hope to provide a forum for students to further develop and refine their research. Abstracts: Applicants may submit abstracts of no more than 400 words, not including references, in PDF format with fonts embedded. Abstracts can be submitted via the following website: http://linguistlist.org/confcustom/jiljadid2012 The deadline for abstracts is November 1, 2011. Abstracts should not include identifying information. However, you must indicate the highest degree you have obtained and your current position (e.g. “M.A., Graduate Student”, Ph.D., Assistant Professor”, etc.) Funding: We are well aware of the financial restrictions facing graduate students. Due to budget difficulties, Jīl Jadīd is unable to provide financial assistance for travel expenses. Lodging with local graduate students will be made available when possible. Conference fees: There will be no fees required of presenters and/or attendees. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Arabic-L: 09 Sep 2011 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I am currently teaching English in the United Arab Emirates. Over the past year I have been teaching myself Arabic (a mix of Modern Standard and colloquial) by using a range of free resources online (websites, YouTube videos, etc.), a handful of simple phrase books and dictionaries, conversation with Arab colleagues, and everyday practice. I'm proud of what I have accomplished in just ten months of living in an Arab country--I understand most of the writing system, including the common harakat; I've got a reasonable handle on pronunciation of new words in written texts; and I'm not bashful about practicing my beginner's Arabic with folks outside; however, I feel I need a much more regimented approach if I'm to attain the level of proficiency I desire. If it is not too much trouble, could you please share with me any recommendations for online, text, audio, and/or multimedia language-learning programs that focus on Modern Standard Arabic. I am tagging Arabic texts (classical Arabic sources, mostly biographical dictionaries and chronicles) to be converted into XML format for the following analysis. Currently I am doing that in MS Word 2007, which, despite all improvements, does not handle long text files well and crashes from time to time. I was desperately trying to find a good alternative, but did not succeed so far. I need a text editor which have/do the following: - Support for bi-directional text and Unicode; - Support for large text files (mine are not too big, but may go up to 20Mb of TXT in UTF-8; Yaqut’s *Mu‘jam al-Buldan* is ~9Mb, Ibn ‘Imad’s *Shadharat al-Dhahab* is ~8Mb; Ibn al-Jawzi’s *al-Muntazam* is 12Mb); - Changing Font and its Size; - Custom Highlighting: an editable list of symbols and phrases (in Arabic) to be highlighted for visibility. The sources I work with have a number of technical topoi (most obvious examples are the words like bab, fasl, harf etc.) that mark the structure of the book as well as transition points between information of different kind (for example, in al-Sam‘ani’s *Kitab al-ansab* the explanation of most of nisba names begins with phrases like wa-hadhihi-l-nisba ila and ends with wa-l-mashhur bi-hadhihi-l-nisba, or wa-ilay-ha, or wa-ntasaba[t] ila etc.). Having them highlighted makes the structure of the test highly visible and tagging process much faster and easier. - The editor should be stable and fast. I will deeply appreciate any comments and suggestions. Best regards, Maxim G. The CASA II program offers the opportunity to study for one or two semesters (Fall, Spring or both) at the American University in Cairo. The program is meant to be flexible in order to cater to the individual linguistic and research needs of each CASA II fellow. Individual academic programs will be designed in close consultation between the fellow and the CASA Executive Director in Cairo. Each CASA II fellow is expected to enroll in three tutorials per semester. These tutorials can be in any of the language skills or in the fellow's own field of specialization. In addition, CASA II fellows are welcome to enroll in any of the regular CASA I classes offered during the fall and spring semesters as part of their CASA II program. Fellows will also be expected to participate in and contribute to the full range of activities of the CASA program in Egypt. Requirements: To qualify for a CASA II fellowship, an applicant must have completed the CASA I Full-Year program within the past five years and must be enrolled in a graduate program in Arabic and/or Middle Eastern Studies. Former CASA fellows who graduated more than five years ago may apply for a CASA II fellowship, but will be required to take the CASA Entrance Exam in order to assess their current level of proficiency in Arabic. Each applicant must complete and submit the CASA II application form and provide all supporting documents by the designated deadline. For those applicants being considered for a fellowship, a 15-20 minute oral interview in Arabic will be coordinated to discuss their proposals with the CASA Executive Director. This interview takes place in early March when the CASA Selection Committee convenes. Each CASA II fellow is expected to pay a non-refundable program fee of $825 per semester (Consortium rate) or $1,100 per semester (Non-Consortium rate). Please note that only fellows affiliated with a CASA Consortium university, at the time program fees are due, are eligible for the Consortium rate. Applicants for CASA II have the option of participating on a Pay-Your-Own-Way basis, if they have other sources of funding. Applicants are encouraged to seek funding from other available sources, such as the Fulbright Hays Student Scholarships, for their CASA studies. The deadline for Fulbright Hays Scholarships is October 17, 2011. Please visit the website for more information: http://us.fulbrightonline.org/program_country.html?id=32 Benefits: A CASA II fellowship award covers tuition for one or two semesters based on the fellow's choice, round trip airfare and a monthly stipend of 3,550 Egyptian pounds. Do they behave in a similar way to the the English phrasal verbs which are considered as transitive because they are inseperable such as (count on)? What I know is that, in English, the noun phrases after such verbs are considered DO, but in Arabic the whole prepositional phrase is the object. Is that right? In Arabic, can we consider only the noun phrase which follows the prepositions in the prepositional phrase as DO, as in English? I appreciat if you have any comments about this issue, or any references that you think are helpful. Thank you very much. On the heels of memorials and reflections marking the ten-year anniversary of 9/11, the Euphrates Institute offers a new way forward in America’s relationship with the Middle East. The Summit will bring together visionaries on global issues and an audience of change agents to create a platform for paradigm shifts on the Middle East. Joined by Euphrates’ Warriors for Peace®, the next generation of peace and sustainability leaders focused on the Middle East, participants in the Summit will explore ideas for progress and new levels of thinking in this post-9/11 era. The Summit takes place at Euphrates’ partnering institution, Principia College, a four-year liberal arts college with a century-old institutional history. The National Historic Landmark campus is perched on the Mississippi River bluffs about 30 miles north of St. Louis. The two-day Summit, Thursday and Friday, October 27th and 28th, will include three sessions designed around Euphrates’ IIT approach – to Inform, Inspire, and Transform. An expert-led, in-depth overview of the status of the Middle East – West relations will kick things off Thursday morning for the Inform session, followed by a look at inspiring models of peace, coexistence, and cooperation from the globe’s most successful peacemakers in the Inspire session. Friday will focus on “bringing the ideas home” as peacemakers provide not only the reasons, but the tools for each one of us to heal divides, take personal responsibility, and commit to action in the Transform session. Speakers at the Summit include Dr. James Zogby, head of the Arab American Institute, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Iran Ambassador John Limbert, Rev. Can. Charles Gibbs, head of United Religions Initiative, Manal Omar, current Middle East Programs director at USIP, Tom Quiggin, a court-qualified expert on terrorism, Israeli peacemaker Dr. Yehuda Stolov, and Sami Awad, executive director of Palestinian non-profit Holy Land Trust, among over a dozen other speakers from the Middle East, the U.S., and Canada. If you already have the basics and do not feel the need for the simplified introduction that the Teach Yourself series provides, I suggest going straight to the Al-Kitaab series. Other online resources I found helpful were Learn Arabic Online, which has short newspaper articles in both written and spoken format, and Aswaat Arabiyya, which is free and focuses on listening comprehension at all levels of study. For reading, I also found graphic novels and cartoons an enjoyable entry into the intermediate/advanced reading level. Tintin, for instance, is readily available in Arabic, as are many Anime videos (colloquial and Fusha). For vocabulary building, I can recommend my own software, Latifah, which is a glorified flashcard program with built-in vocabulary from the standard Arabic methods, including the two I mentioned. It sells for $35 and is also available online or directly from me. Good luck in your studies. CASA I Fellowships: (Cairo: June 2012-May 2013) The CASA I fellowships provide intensive language and culture training in Egyptian Colloquial and Modern Standard Arabic (reading, listening and writing) for three semesters (summer, fall and spring) and allow students in the spring semester to take courses in Arabic in their respective areas of specialization. In 2011-2012, CASA offered 46 CASA I fellowships in Cairo, and we expect to offer 28 fellowships in 2012-2013. Requirements: To qualify for a CASA I fellowship, an applicant must: 1) be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident; 2) be enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate program or be in between their undergraduate and graduate study; 3) be committed to a career in Middle Eastern Studies; and 4) pass the CASA Selection exam, which usually requires a minimum of 3 years of college level language study. The exam will be administered to all applicants at a school in their locality on Friday, January 20, 2012. Each applicant must complete and submit the CASA I application form and provide all supporting documents by the designated deadline. For those applicants awarded a fellowship, a 20 to 30 minute Oral Proficiency Interview in Arabic will be coordinated with a certified oral proficiency tester. This interview takes place in April once an applicant’s enrollment in CASA is confirmed. Each CASA I applicant is required to pay a non-refundable program fee of $1,650 (Consortium rate) or $2,200 (Non-Consortium rate) once an award has been accepted. Please note that only applicants affiliated with a CASA Consortium university, at the time program fees are due, are eligible for the Consortium rate. Applicants for CASA I have the option of participating on a Pay-Your-Own-Way basis, if they have other sources of funding. Applicants are encouraged to seek funding from other available sources, such as the Fulbright Hays Student Scholarships, for their CASA studies. The deadline for Fulbright Hays Scholarships is October 17, 2011. Department of and Center for Middle Eastern Studies are pleased to announce that they will host the 2nd Annual J?l Jad?d Conference, a graduate student conference in Arabic Literature and Linguistics, to be held at the University of Texas at Austin, February 23-25, 2012. Last February, graduate students from eighteen universities assembled to set the tone for Arabic studies in the twenty-first century. The overwhelming, positive feedback from this ?new generation? for J?l Jad?d 2011 prompts us to assemble again in order to keep the conversation going. The purpose of this conference remains to bring together students spread across area studies, linguistics, comparative literature and other departments in order to facilitate a productive and interdisciplinary exchange of new ideas. At the center of the conference lies the goal of fostering productive and fruitful dialogue. J?l Jad?d 2012 intends to continue exploring innovative approaches to presentations and the conference committee will decide the final format of the conference, to be announced when available. Submitters presenting papers on the ?the state of the field? will be asked to provide a bibliography in electronic formation two weeks prior to the conference. ?M.A., Graduate Student?, Ph.D., Assistant Professor?, etc.) Funding: We are well aware of the financial restrictions facing graduate students. Due to budget difficulties, J?l Jad?d is unable to provide financial assistance for travel expenses. ????? ?????? ?? ?????? I am tagging Arabic texts (classical Arabic sources, mostly biographical dictionaries and chronicles) to be converted into XML format for the following analysis. Currently I am doing that in MS Word 2007, which, despite all improvements, does not handle long text files well and crashes from time to time. I was desperately trying to find a good alternative, but did not succeed so far. I need a text editor which have/do the following: - Support for bi-directional text and Unicode; - Support for large text files (mine are not too big, but may go up to 20Mb of TXT in UTF-8; Yaqut?s *Mu?jam al-Buldan* is ~9Mb, Ibn ?Imad?s *Shadharat al-Dhahab* is ~8Mb; Ibn al-Jawzi?s *al-Muntazam* is 12Mb); - Changing Font and its Size; - Custom Highlighting: an editable list of symbols and phrases (in Arabic) to be highlighted for visibility. The sources I work with have a number of technical topoi (most obvious examples are the words like bab, fasl, harf etc.) that mark the structure of the book as well as transition points between information of different kind (for example, in al-Sam?ani?s *Kitab al-ansab* the explanation of most of nisba names begins with phrases like wa-hadhihi-l-nisba ila and ends with wa-l-mashhur bi-hadhihi-l-nisba, or wa-ilay-ha, or wa-ntasaba[t] ila etc.).
