Subject:Passing of Dr. Wallace Erwin

Dear Colleagues:

Wallace M. Erwin died at the age of 89 on August 4, 2011 in Amherst, Mass.
He taught at Georgetown University from 1964 to 1986 where he chaired the
Arabic Department from 1964 to 1981, was the author or co-author of Arabic
textbooks and grammars, and mentored many master's and doctoral theses from
the 1960s to 1980s. Dr. Erwin was also a founding member of AATA. Many of
us remember with great fondness and appreciation his highly organized and
engaging teaching, from elementary MSA to graduate courses in dialectology
and Arabic linguistics. He was a dedicated and brilliant teacher and
mentor.

We will remember Dr. Erwin during the 12:00 noon Mass in Dahlgren Chapel on
the Georgetown University campus in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 21, 2011.
All are welcome to attend. Please RSVP to Jackie Murgida if you plan to
attend the service (jmurg at cox.net<mailto:jmurg at cox.net>), NOT TO ARABIC-L.

Best regards,
-- Jackie
