This 60-minute webinar will be led by Dr. Nicole Mills, coordinator of the Beginning French language Program at Harvard University and previous coordinator of beginning and intermediate French at the University of Pennsylvania. At both institutions, she developed curriculum grounded in second language acquisition and theory for the beginning and intermediate levels of language instruction. She assisted in last year’s STARTALK Persian program as the curriculum design specialist and has extensive publications in various academic journals and edited volumes on various topics associated with curriculum design and foreign language education, motivation, and engagement. She holds a Ph.D. in Educational Studies and French from Emory University. The webinar will focus on how to create a learner-centered environment by providing opportunities for social negotiation and collaboration through active and authentic language use in meaningful and realistic environments. She will present a brief overview of research and theory associated with the value of experiential and constructivist learning and student engagement in the foreign language classroom. She will then discuss a global simulation curriculum grounded in Paris, France in which students create a fictive yet culturally grounded world, assume the role of a self-developed French character, and collaborate with fellow community members (Magnin, 1997). Adapted from this curriculum, she will propose an adapted curriculum in the Persian language context. With the help of the participants, she will propose ideas for a global simulation curriculum in Beginning or Intermediate level Persian grounded within the Shiraz, Iran context. Ideas will include possible course themes, interactive writing tasks, oral exams, in-class activities, and a final play assignment which encourage student negotiation, collaboration, and active participation. The format of the webinar will be a live webcast with participants emailing in questions and comments before and during the broadcast. This webinar will be held at George Washington University and moderated by Professor Pardis Minuchehr. Please RSVP by visiting: http://nmelrc.org/nmelrc-webinar-april-20th Scott Gemmell NMELRC Research Assistant _________ NO ENGLISH PLEASE! On behalf of the National Middle East Language Resource Center (NMELRC), we would like to invite you to participate in a webinar on Friday, April 20th at 1pm Eastern Standard Time in the U.S. The topic will be: Encouraging student collaboration, negotiation, and engagement in meaningful and relevant environments. A professor at my department recently wrote a paper that suggests that adherence to Islam was in medieval times stronger in localities along the main road network. Since a key aspect to the practice of Islam is the teaching and recitation of the Qur'an, and since the Qur'an is the grammatical mainstay of the formal Arabic language, I wonder if the rules of formal Arabic tended to be followed more consistently along that main road network... with lasting implications for contemporary Arabic colloquial dialects. To test this question empirically, however, I would need a reliable index or metric that enumerates the various Arabic colloquials and indicates how they vary from each other. Do you know if any such index exists among linguists or Arabic scholars? Thank you very much. Conf. on Language Documentation and Conservation -------------------------Messages----------------------------------- 1) Date: 25 Apr 2012 From:nflrc at HAWAII.EDU Subject:3rd Int. Conf. on Language Documentation and Conservation Aloha! The *3rd International Conference on Language Documentation and Conservation (ICLDC),* “Sharing Worlds of Knowledge,” will be held *February 28-March 3, 2013*, at the Hawai‘i Imin International Conference Center on the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa campus. By popular demand, the 3rd ICLDC will be a full day longer than the previous two conferences. The conference program will feature an integrated series of *Master Class workshops*. An optional Hilo Field Study (on the Big Island of Hawai‘i) to visit Hawaiian language revitalization programs in action will immediately follow the conference (March 4-5). This year’s *conference theme, “Sharing Worlds of Knowledge,” *intends to highlight the interdisciplinary nature of language documentation and the need to share methods for documenting the many aspects of human knowledge that language encodes. We aim to build on the strong momentum created by the 1st and 2nd ICLDCs to discuss research and revitalization approaches yielding rich records that can benefit both the field of language documentation and speech communities. We hope you will join us. For more information, visit our *conference website: http://nflrc.hawaii.edu/ICLDC/2013/* * * *CALL FOR PROPOSALS* *Topics* We especially welcome abstracts that address the conference theme of the interdisciplinary nature of language documentation. Language encodes knowledge from many facets of life: kinship, science, taxonomy, material culture, spirituality, music, and others. We encourage presentations on documenting these topics through the lens of endangered languages. We are also seeking abstracts on the science of documentation and revitalization. Documentation is usually portrayed as a means of collecting language data, and revitalization is generally seen primarily as a kind of applied work directly benefiting communities. However, each of those domains is a genuine area of research, and we welcome presentations that treat documentation and revitalization not merely as activities, but also as domains requiring theorization in their own right. In addition to the topics above, we warmly welcome abstracts on other subjects in language documentation and conservation, which may include but are not limited to: - Archiving matters - Community experiences of revitalization - Data management - Ethical issues - Language planning - Lexicography and reference grammar design - Methods of assessing ethnolinguistic vitality - Orthography design - Teaching/learning small languages - Technology in documentation – methods and pitfalls - Topics in areal language documentation - Training in documentation methods – beyond the university - Assessing success in documentation and revitalization strategies *Abstract submission* Abstracts should be submitted in English, but presentations can be in any language. We particularly welcome presentations in languages of the region discussed. Authors may submit no more than one individual and one joint (co-authored) proposal. Abstracts are *due by August 31, 2012*, with notification of acceptance by October 1, 2012. We ask for *abstracts of no more than 400 words* for online publication so that conference participants will have a good idea of the content of your paper, and a *50-word summary* for inclusion in the conference program. All abstracts will be submitted to blind peer review by international experts on the topic. We will only be accepting proposal submissions for papers or posters. Please note that the Advisory Committee may ask that some abstracts submitted as conference talks be presented as posters instead. Selected authors will be invited to submit their conference papers to the journal *Language Documentation & Conservation* for publication. *To submit an online proposal, visit our Call for Proposals page: http://nflrc.hawaii.edu/ICLDC/2013/call.html* *Scholarships* Scholarships of up to US$1,500 will be awarded to the six best abstracts by students and/or community-based (non-academically-employed) language activists, to help defray travel expenses to come and present at the conference. If you are eligible and wish to be considered for a scholarship, please select the appropriate "Yes" button on the proposal submission form. *Presentation formats* Papers will be allowed 20 minutes for presentation with 10 minutes of question time. Posters will be on display throughout the conference. Poster presentations will run during the lunch breaks. Questions? Interested people can pilot either the whole course or parts of it. This entails they teach the course concurrently while it is being taught at GT and at the end of the course give us their feedback as well as the students'. The course is a web-based course and interested people will have access to the web page on GT server. As an overview of the course, it starts with an introduction including Amr Diab's song "Habiby ya Nour al 'ein" to jazz up the course and get the students excited. Especially that the song is taught early on in Alif Baa'. Then it proceeds historically from AlJahiliyya, Advent of Islam and songs inspired by the Omayyad, Abbasid, Fatimid eras, The kingdom period in Egypt, Gamal Abdel Nasser and 23 July revolution, Sadat and the opening of investment, Clash of the civilization Mubarak and post 9/11, and finally the Arab spring. Egyptian Arabic is chosen because of the widespread popularity of the Egyptian songs and movie industry. Hopefully in future phases of the project we can work on in incorporating other songs from other regional dialects. The songs' language range from, Classical as in 'Tala'a al Badr 'alayna' to MSA as in Nizar Qabbaani's poems, to Egyptian as in, romantic, religious, patriotic, popular and shabaabi songs. Each song has interactive tasks and sources accompanying it: such as reading Sources and excerpts related to the background of the song or lyrics from the web and other historical and cultural textbooks, and listening sources such as other links on Youtube. Here is the an example of the format of the unit. 1- Song's name and title and overview about the song, period, and the singer 2- Notes on the text and lyrics of the song. 3- Pedagogical Tasks: A- Listening Tasks: i. Pre-listening, ii. During listening, iii. post listening B- Vocabulary and Grammar tasks C- Questions for Deeper Understanding D- Oral and Written in Class Discussion (to prepare the students in writing as an evaluation of their uptake) E- Further Listening and Reading Suggestions (for further exploration) The questions in the tasks are interactive with instant feedback and are of MC, fill in the blanks, Open ended questions. The pages also can be printed so that the instructor can have the answers if he or she needs to correct them manually. As for the course assessment, we will provide the assessment. However, for the evaluation of the piloting, we have a survey/essay style feedback at semester end from students and instructor. Those interested in piloting the whole course or just parts of it please send an email specifying whether you plan to pilot the whole course or just parts of it. -- Rajaa Aquil, Ph.D. Assistant Professor of Arabic, & Director of Arabic LBAT School of Modern Languages Georgia Institute of Technology 613 Cherry Street Swann Building #317 Atlanta, GA 30332 Phone: 4043857252 Fax: 4048940955 Email: rajaa.aquil at modlangs.gatech.edu -------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Arabic-L: 09 Apr 2012 From dilworthparkinson at GMAIL.COM Mon Apr 9 23:04:50 2012 From: dilworthparkinson at GMAIL.COM (Dilworth Parkinson) Date: Mon, 9 Apr 2012 17:04:50 -0600 Subject: Arabic-L:PEDA:School Arabia project: free online Arabic lessons Message-ID: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Arabic-L: Mon 09 Apr 2012 Moderator: Dilworth Parkinson [To post messages to the list, send them to arabic-l at byu.edu] [To unsubscribe, send message from same address you subscribed from to listserv at byu.edu with first line reading: unsubscribe arabic-l ] -------------------------Directory------------------------------------ 1) Subject:School Arabia project: free online Arabic lessons -------------------------Messages----------------------------------- 1) Date: 09 Apr 2012 From:"Moh'd Abbas" Subject:School Arabia project: free online Arabic lessons Arabic is a living language Teaching and learning Arabic Language online is a new experience. Interested people can pilot either the whole course or parts of it. This entails they teach the course concurrently while it is being taught at GT and at the end of the course give us their feedback as well as the students'. The course is a web-based course and interested people will have access to the web page on GT server. The course material is independent of Alkitab and requires at least 5 semesters of learning Arabic. Hopefully in future phases of the project we can work on incorporating other songs from other regional dialects. The songs' language range from, Classical as in 'Tala'a al Badr 'alayna' to MSA as in Nizar Qabbaani's poems, to Egyptian as in, romantic, religious, patriotic, popular and shabaabi songs. Each song has interactive tasks and sources accompanying it: such as reading Sources and excerpts related to the background of the song or lyrics from the web and other historical and cultural texts, and listening sources such as links on Youtube. Here is the an example of the format of the unit. Note that class sessions, debates and discussions are in Arabic. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Arabic-L: 11 Apr 2012 From dilworthparkinson at GMAIL.COM Wed Apr 11 21:55:27 2012 From: dilworthparkinson at GMAIL.COM (Dilworth Parkinson) Date: Wed, 11 Apr 2012 15:55:27 -0600 Subject: Arabic-L:LING:Survey on use of Arabic Chat Alphabet Message-ID: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Arabic-L: Mon 11 Apr 2012 Moderator: Dilworth Parkinson [To post messages to the list, send them to arabic-l at byu.edu] [To unsubscribe, send message from same address you subscribed from to listserv at byu.edu with first line reading: unsubscribe arabic-l ] -------------------------Directory------------------------------------ 1) Subject:Survey on use of Arabic Chat Alphabet -------------------------Messages----------------------------------- 1) Date: 11 Apr 2012 From:Paul Charbel pcharbel at drew.edu Subject:Survey on use of Arabic Chat Alphabet Attention Arabic/English Speakers! She assisted in last year?s STARTALK Persian program as the curriculum design specialist and has extensive publications in various academic journals and edited volumes on various topics associated with curriculum design and foreign language education, motivation, and engagement. Conf. on Language Documentation and Conservation Aloha! The *3rd International Conference on Language Documentation and Conservation (ICLDC),* ?Sharing Worlds of Knowledge,? will be held *February 28-March 3, 2013*, at the Hawai?i Imin International Conference Center on the University of Hawai?i at M?noa campus. By popular demand, the 3rd ICLDC will be a full day longer than the previous two conferences. The conference program will feature an integrated series of *Master Class workshops*. An optional Hilo Field Study (on the Big Island of Hawai?i) to visit Hawaiian language revitalization programs in action will immediately follow the conference (March 4-5). This year?s *conference theme, ?Sharing Worlds of Knowledge,? *intends to highlight the interdisciplinary nature of language documentation and the need to share methods for documenting the many aspects of human knowledge that language encodes. In addition to the topics above, we warmly welcome abstracts on other subjects in language documentation and conservation, which may include but are not limited to: - Archiving matters - Community experiences of revitalization - Data management - Ethical issues - Language planning - Lexicography and reference grammar design - Methods of assessing ethnolinguistic vitality - Orthography design - Teaching/learning small languages - Technology in documentation ? methods and pitfalls - Topics in areal language documentation - Training in documentation methods ? beyond the university - Assessing success in documentation and revitalization strategies *Abstract submission* Abstracts should be submitted in English, but presentations can be in any language. Questions?
