Dear Arabic instructors and students,

We are pleased to announce that the UW-Madison Arabic, Persian, and Turkish
Language Immersion Institute (APTLII) is now accepting applications for
Summer 2013, which will run from June 15 to August 10. APTLII is an
eight-week intensive summer language immersion program for undergraduates,
graduate students, and professionals. Outside of the classroom, students
commit to using their target language at all times - in their shared living
space on campus, at meals, and at co-curricular activities that combine to
create a language immersion experience.

Courses are offered at levels ranging from Beginner to Advanced (depending
on sufficient enrollment), and provide two semesters of academic credit.
Instruction is given in small groups taught by native speakers and
experienced language teachers. The classes are intensive, involving a
minimum of 4.5 hours contact hours daily Monday through Friday, with a
packed schedule of afternoon and evening activities and workshops. The
total charge is $7,000 including tuition, housing, and meals. Students are
eligible to apply for Summer FLAS fellowships from UW-Madison Global
Studies to cover the entire cost of the program (visit flas.wisc.edu<

This is one especially-interesting query to me, since I am an Arabic
language teacher and dialectologist (largely circumstantial and
specializing in the Saudi, Gulf and Yemeni Arabic dialects).

Herewith some impressions (and I realize I may well be misinformed or
under-informed, so I look forward to the final listing you compile from the
replies by other list-members):

Overview - I know of no deliberate, full-blown **dialect-only** or
**dialect-prevalent** Arabic programs at either the undergraduate or
graduate levels at institutions in the US or Canada.

Much the same situation seems prevalent at institutions in UK, although I
have heard of occasional offerings by SOAS in low-density dialects of
Arabic (and preliterate non-Arabic languages of South Arabia) to prepare
doctoral students outbound to various host countries to do their field
research and thus they need better-than-superficial skills in
conversability, linguistics, or ethnography.

The Arabic language programs with which I am familiar are based on each
building and maintaining a strong foundation in MSA. Dialects seem
introduced, if at all, considerably later in a program and as almost-random
offerings or occasional electives. The "big three" (especially in US
Government linguist circles) Arabic dialects have been Egyptian (Cairene),
Syrian (Shaamii) and Iraqi (Baghdadi).

Institutions in the US which offer some courses in selected Arabic dialects
include:

[1] Georgetown - Egyptian, Syrian, Iraq, Maghrebi
(FWIW, the library there inherited -- from CAL when it closed its library
before its move from VA into DC -- some excellent, if not unique by now,
descriptive pubs for self-training on Libyan coastal and rural dialects.
Done under contract by some US universities which hosted groups of Libyan
students and engaged them as respondents, their design and contents were
very functional and intended for [ahem] field use by international aid
workers and technicians, such as USAID employees and the like.  Those
were/are "oldies but goldies" in my opinion, since there is so little
material around in English, Arabic, French, Russian, Italian or other
languages about Libyan Arabic.)

[2] U Michigan - Iraqi (at least)
Ernest McCarus would probably be the most-knowledgeable person there for
details on the status of those offerings.

[3] U of Arizona - Gulf [Emirati] Arabic, taught mostly by Hamdy Qafisheh
(if he is still teaching there).
I think he tried to set up some similar introductory courses there in
Yemeni (Sana'ni) Arabic, but that did not materialize due to low, or no,
interest and enrollment sufficient to make a class.

[4] The U of Texas at Austin - various dialects; ask Kristan Brustad.

[5] Florida State U - Iraqi (might be U of Southern Florida instead)

[6] A small university in Montana with a faculty member originally from
Yemen (I can track down the details).
He teaches basic undergrad classes in MSA and graduate linguistics seminars
on Arabic dialectology, contrastive linguistics & diglossia. He can develop
and deliver detailed descriptive courses about the major local dialects in
Yemen on request (he mentioned that no request from anywhere has appeared
to date).

FYI, the DLIFLC at Presidio of Monterey has been expanding its offerings of
Arabic dialects [albeit only for familiarization or transition, apparently]
in Yemeni (Sana'ani, not on Adeni or Hadarami), Maghrebi, and Sudanese (I
surmise Khartoumi).
[I was contacted earlier this year about becoming an over-the-phone tester
for Yemeni and Sudanese. I asked what materials are being used or were
under development; the reply about the work underway there sounded chaotic
and in "patchwork" mode due to tight time limits. I surmise those dialect
packages [for lack of a more-elegant  descriptor] are either:

-- [1] (this is only a "maybe" speculation) 14-week add-on portions
integrated during the last phases of the current 67-week resident basic
Arabic language [MSA-based] course there, or

-- [2] they are "stand alone" __i.e. "Headstart"-type__
familiarization-focused, multimedia modules, exportable to US military
units located elsewhere.

I live in Baltimore Maryland, Zip Code 21209. I am looking for a
once-a-week tutor who can meet me at a library or other convenient place to
study, or in his or her or my home (my office is not possible). A library
is great, but we need a reserved room in which we can speak. I work until
5:30 at the latest in the afternoon. I can leave my office, which is in
Towson, Maryland, Zip Code 21204, and be at a lesson as soon as possible
after that. I am an upper intermediate student. My prior tutor used the
Alif Baa’ series, and I’d like to keep doing that. I have spent much time
in Egypt, and want to activate the Egyptian dialect in this series.  I am
taking up this study late in life, but I am enthusiastic about it. This is
in-person tutoring preferred over someone using Skype. I would rather show
up for the lessons. I anticipate either two one-hour lessons or one
90-minute lesson. Convenient parking will be important to me. My home has
it, and I think most public libraries have it, but I think University
libraries don’t.****

Hello everyone

I am a graduate student at UW-Madison working on a master's degree in
teaching Arabic as a second language.

I am conducting a qualitative research study to assess current attitudes
among college-level Arabic teachers towards the integration of spoken
Arabic with MSA in the first semester Arabic classroom, including regular
use of spoken Arabic as the language of instruction. This is notably the
method exemplified in such teaching packages as the 3rd edition of the Alif
Baa and Al-Kitaab fii Ta'allum al-'Arabiyya by K. Brustad, M. Al-Batal and
A. Al-Tonsi; and also Living Arabic: A Comprehensive Introductory Course,
by M. Younes and M. Garen. I am looking for two groups:

1) Teachers who have practical experience applying the integrated approach
in introductory Arabic courses and can speak to its pros and cons, and;

2) Teachers who, being aware of these methods, have expressly chosen not to
employ them out of opposition to the integrated approach.

I will shortly have a survey to send to you which will need to be returned
within the next 10 days. It is very simple and should not take more than
about 10 minutes to complete. There is no payment involved and your names
will not be used in the study. However, those who participate are welcome
to an emailed copy of the resulting paper should they request it.

If you fall into one of the two groups described above and would be willing

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Arabic, Persian, and Turkish Language
Immersion Institute (APTLII) invites applications for summer 2013 language
staff.

APTLII is an 8-week summer residential language immersion program. Students
and staff will live on campus in a language community and are expected to
use the appropriate language (Arabic, Persian, or Turkish) at all times.
Employment dates for summer 2012 are June 9 - August 10. Further

We strongly urge you to consider submitting a proposal for the premiere
conference in the US on the teaching of foreign languages (including
Arabic) ACTFL 2013. The 2013 ACTFL Convention & World Languages Expo is
organized by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages and
spans the K-16 educational spectrum:

The deadline for proposals is on January 9th for general submissions to
ACTFL, but the proposal deadline for the Arabic SIG is on January 18. You

and content of your presentation:

□        Standards and Assessment - How do language professionals use
standards to drive instruction and assessments? Effective language programs
are derived from rigorous standards aligned with appropriate learning
assessments, both formative and summative, to measure learner progress.
 Proposals in this category include those that focus on performance and
proficiency testing, horizontal and vertical articulation, and development
and alignment of curriculum frameworks, such as the Common Core.

□        Personalized Learning - How can we personalize the language
learning experience?  Effective language programs and experiences that
focus on the needs and interests of learners as well as promote critical
and creative both within and outside the traditional classroom are the
central ideas of this category. Proposals that investigate topics such as
learner motivation and autonomy, meeting the needs of special populations,
developing student leaders, promoting learner interest instruction and
designing language programs for special purposes including career pathways
are the targets for this category. The goal is to create communities of
learners that promote cross-cultural communication and encourage learning
to take language learning beyond the classroom.

□        Educator Effectiveness - How do language professionals determine
the professional development we need to achieve our career goals? Teacher
development is an ongoing need particularly in light of the Race to the Top
requirements for educator effectiveness.  Proposals in this category focus
on teacher development issues including teacher education programs such as
NCATE/CAEP, mentoring and coaching, and National Board certification. Also
included are strategies to meet new state teacher evaluation systems.

□        Research-informed Instruction - How do language professionals
engage students and educators as learners? Instructional strategies
undergirded by research and data-driven decision-making form the basis for
sound instructional programs.  What does the research say about “high
leverage teaching practices” and how can we incorporate these into the
learning process to engage our learners?  What are the most effective means
in promoting language acquisition in our learners?

□        Program Models - What do language educators need to know about
effective models for language learning?  Learning environments that serve
heritage learners, that encourage content-based learning such as STEM
programs, service learning programs, or immersion models should be included
in this category. Study abroad programs as well as online and hybrid
learning models illustrate how learner needs are being met.

□        Cultural Proficiency - How is cultural proficiency developed in
the learner?  What are the elements of intercultural competence and how can
we assess them effectively? Proposals that focus on media literacy,
literature, the arts (dance, music, film, visual arts), and global
competence are included in this category.  In addition, sessions that
examine the relationships among cultural perspectives, products, and
practices demonstrate how cultural proficiency is addressed both within and
beyond the classroom.

□        Educational Policy and Leadership - What collaborative efforts
have led to effective advocacy for improving the prospects for language
funding, legislation, and policies that move the national agenda forward?
 What programs are developing leaders in our profession to ensure our
efficacy in these areas? Promoting language education from the local and
state levels to the national level is an important priority for the
language profession.  Examples of effective advocacy for language programs

Anne Arundel Community College is seeking qualified instructors for an
intensive summer STARTALK Arabic program entitled "Launching into Arabic
Learning and Teaching Program 2013."  The student component of the program
is designed for high school and college level students and will be held  at
the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD from June 24 - July 19, 2013,
pending final approvals. A two week intensive teacher training program will
be incorporated into the program immediately prior to the start of the
student program (June 10-21, 2013) and is  required for all instructors. We
are seeking dynamic lead instructors for beginning Novice level Arabic and
advanced Novice level Arabic. Courses are heavily focused on the
development of communicative Arabic language skills.

Pay is a competitive stipend.

Instructors must have minimum of a Bachelor’s degree and advanced level of
Arabic proficiency. Two year’s classroom experience using communicative
methodologies to teach in highly interactive classroom environments
preferred. Master's degree in Arabic or Education preferred.

U.S. Citizenship preferred due to Department of Navy security procedures.

Papers are invited on topics that deal with theoretical and applied issues
of Arabic Linguistics. Research in the following areas of Arabic

Meeting Description:

Following up on a scientific workshop originally hosted at the Institut für
Afrikanistik, Universität zu Köln, Germany (April 6-7, 2010), TASIA2 will
be hosted by the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB). The workshop will
continue to explore different aspects of the use of Arabic based script for
the writing of languages in Africa, apart from Arabic, which is also known
as Ajami.

Please note: There will be no conference fee. The organizers will offer two
lunches during the conference, as well as an ending cocktail. Costs of
accommodation & travel must be covered by the participants themselves, but
the organizers will try to assist in finding transport & accommodation to
the venue.

Call for Papers:

We invite papers in English or French which discuss the use of such scripts
and orthographies within their socio-cultural context with a focus on
linguistic, socio-linguistic, or psycholinguistic aspects, of both current
and past use.

We particularly welcome any papers with a comparative approach as well as
papers, which point to or summarize tentative sub-fields of research, which
could produce synergetic effects through collaborative research on
different writing traditions. Specific questions could include:

New Insights into the Use and Spread of Arabic-based Scripts:

- How many languages use or have used Arabic-based script and how?
- When and for how long was Arabic-based script used for which languages,
and which languages employ it today or have started re-employing it?
- How many documents were produced?
- What are the contents and genres of such documents?
- How did these literacies come into being? Were those writing traditions
created on the basis of Arabic or another Arabic-based script tradition, or
were they created artificially?

Grammatological Properties of Arabic-based Scripts:

- How and why do these Arabic-based scripts deviate from the Arabic script
as used for Arabic?
- How does African use of Arabic-based script deviate from the use of
Arabic-based script for other languages beyond Arabic, such as in Europe,
the Americas, or Asia?
- Are any adaptations arbitrary or motivated?
- Are there areal trends or features among the adaptations and are these
possibly inspired by common regional, pan-African, Arabic, or other uses of
Arabic-based script?
- Can we pinpoint such areal features to common origins?
- Have these orthographies ever been standardized?
- If not, could the non-standardization possibly be motivated?
- How well do Arabic script-based orthographies represent their respective
language(s)?
- Can all phonemes be represented and how ambiguous are these
representations?

Sociolinguistic Properties of Arabic-based Scripts:

- What is the relationship between written and spoken language?
- Do the written varieties differ from the spoken ones?
- Are any such possible differences between written and spoken varieties
stable across writers?
- How should we classify any possible differing written varieties?
- What is the relationship between actively competing writing systems?
- How does the competition between writing systems interact with the
language varieties of the written texts?
- To what extent are or have such writing traditions been used within
specific contexts or domains of communication? Have these writing systems
been used beyond the individual or religious domain, such as at

it being represented in handwriting only, or are texts also typeset
manually or represented in digital media, such as using computers, in text
messaging, or on the Internet?

Identifying Areas of Future Research in the Context of Arabic-based Script:

- What can we learn from the study of Arabic-based script, beyond the
intrinsic data?
- Should certain writing traditions be prioritized over others due to
cultural change?
- In which fields of research could we expect synergetic effects from
collaborative research?

In the concluding discussions, we would like to discuss in particular the
scope, range, timeframe, and possibilities of funding for possible
collaborative research between participants as well as further colleagues
in the field.

The symposium will be accompanied by an exhibition of some exemplary
manuscripts, which should demonstrate the range and scope of these writing
systems for general audiences. For this we would welcome any submissions of
digital copies of manuscripts, which are free for rights and whose quality
would suffice for reproduction in larger formats, together with brief
comment about the contents. For any further questions, please contact the

Dear Arabic instructors and students,

We are pleased to announce that the UW-Madison Arabic, Persian, and Turkish
Language Immersion Institute (APTLII) is now accepting applications for
Summer 2013, which will run from June 15 to August 10. APTLII is an
eight-week intensive summer language immersion program for undergraduates,
graduate students, and professionals. Outside of the classroom, students
commit to using their target language at all times - in their shared living
space on campus, at meals, and at co-curricular activities that combine to
create a language immersion experience.

Courses are offered at levels ranging from Beginner to Advanced (depending
on sufficient enrollment), and provide two semesters of academic credit.
Instruction is given in small groups taught by native speakers and
experienced language teachers. The classes are intensive, involving a
minimum of 4.5 hours contact hours daily Monday through Friday, with a
packed schedule of afternoon and evening activities and workshops. The
total charge is $7,000 including tuition, housing, and meals. Students are
eligible to apply for Summer FLAS fellowships from UW-Madison Global

This is one especially-interesting query to me, since I am an Arabic
language teacher and dialectologist (largely circumstantial and
specializing in the Saudi, Gulf and Yemeni Arabic dialects).

Herewith some impressions (and I realize I may well be misinformed or
under-informed, so I look forward to the final listing you compile from the
replies by other list-members):

Overview - I know of no deliberate, full-blown **dialect-only** or
**dialect-prevalent** Arabic programs at either the undergraduate or
graduate levels at institutions in the US or Canada.

Much the same situation seems prevalent at institutions in UK, although I
have heard of occasional offerings by SOAS in low-density dialects of
Arabic (and preliterate non-Arabic languages of South Arabia) to prepare
doctoral students outbound to various host countries to do their field
research and thus they need better-than-superficial skills in
conversability, linguistics, or ethnography.

The Arabic language programs with which I am familiar are based on each
building and maintaining a strong foundation in MSA. Dialects seem
introduced, if at all, considerably later in a program and as almost-random
offerings or occasional electives. The "big three" (especially in US
Government linguist circles) Arabic dialects have been Egyptian (Cairene),
Syrian (Shaamii) and Iraqi (Baghdadi).

Institutions in the US which offer some courses in selected Arabic dialects
include:

[1] Georgetown - Egyptian, Syrian, Iraq, Maghrebi
(FWIW, the library there inherited -- from CAL when it closed its library
before its move from VA into DC -- some excellent, if not unique by now,
descriptive pubs for self-training on Libyan coastal and rural dialects.
Done under contract by some US universities which hosted groups of Libyan
students and engaged them as respondents, their design and contents were
very functional and intended for [ahem] field use by international aid
workers and technicians, such as USAID employees and the like.  Those
were/are "oldies but goldies" in my opinion, since there is so little
material around in English, Arabic, French, Russian, Italian or other
languages about Libyan Arabic.)

[2] U Michigan - Iraqi (at least)
Ernest McCarus would probably be the most-knowledgeable person there for
details on the status of those offerings.

[3] U of Arizona - Gulf [Emirati] Arabic, taught mostly by Hamdy Qafisheh
(if he is still teaching there).
I think he tried to set up some similar introductory courses there in
Yemeni (Sana'ni) Arabic, but that did not materialize due to low, or no,
interest and enrollment sufficient to make a class.

[4] The U of Texas at Austin - various dialects; ask Kristan Brustad.

[5] Florida State U - Iraqi (might be U of Southern Florida instead)

[6] A small university in Montana with a faculty member originally from
Yemen (I can track down the details).
He teaches basic undergrad classes in MSA and graduate linguistics seminars
on Arabic dialectology, contrastive linguistics & diglossia. He can develop
and deliver detailed descriptive courses about the major local dialects in
Yemen on request (he mentioned that no request from anywhere has appeared
to date).

FYI, the DLIFLC at Presidio of Monterey has been expanding its offerings of
Arabic dialects [albeit only for familiarization or transition, apparently]
in Yemeni (Sana'ani, not on Adeni or Hadarami), Maghrebi, and Sudanese (I
surmise Khartoumi).
[I was contacted earlier this year about becoming an over-the-phone tester
for Yemeni and Sudanese. I asked what materials are being used or were
under development; the reply about the work underway there sounded chaotic
and in "patchwork" mode due to tight time limits. I surmise those dialect
packages [for lack of a more-elegant  descriptor] are either:

-- [1] (this is only a "maybe" speculation) 14-week add-on portions
integrated during the last phases of the current 67-week resident basic
Arabic language [MSA-based] course there, or

-- [2] they are "stand alone" __i.e. "Headstart"-type__
familiarization-focused, multimedia modules, exportable to US military
units located elsewhere.

5:30 at the latest in the afternoon. I can leave my office, which is in
Towson, Maryland, Zip Code 21204, and be at a lesson as soon as possible
after that. I am an upper intermediate student. My prior tutor used the
Alif Baa? series, and I?d like to keep doing that. I have spent much time
in Egypt, and want to activate the Egyptian dialect in this series.  I am
taking up this study late in life, but I am enthusiastic about it. This is
in-person tutoring preferred over someone using Skype. I would rather show
up for the lessons. I anticipate either two one-hour lessons or one
90-minute lesson. Convenient parking will be important to me. My home has
it, and I think most public libraries have it, but I think University
libraries don?t.****

Hello everyone

I am a graduate student at UW-Madison working on a master's degree in
teaching Arabic as a second language.

I am conducting a qualitative research study to assess current attitudes
among college-level Arabic teachers towards the integration of spoken
Arabic with MSA in the first semester Arabic classroom, including regular
use of spoken Arabic as the language of instruction. This is notably the
method exemplified in such teaching packages as the 3rd edition of the Alif
Baa and Al-Kitaab fii Ta'allum al-'Arabiyya by K. Brustad, M. Al-Batal and
A. Al-Tonsi; and also Living Arabic: A Comprehensive Introductory Course,
by M. Younes and M. Garen. I am looking for two groups:

1) Teachers who have practical experience applying the integrated approach
in introductory Arabic courses and can speak to its pros and cons, and;

2) Teachers who, being aware of these methods, have expressly chosen not to
employ them out of opposition to the integrated approach.

I will shortly have a survey to send to you which will need to be returned
within the next 10 days. It is very simple and should not take more than
about 10 minutes to complete. There is no payment involved and your names
will not be used in the study. However, those who participate are welcome
to an emailed copy of the resulting paper should they request it.

effective models for language learning?  Learning environments that serve
heritage learners, that encourage content-based learning such as STEM
programs, service learning programs, or immersion models should be included
in this category. Study abroad programs as well as online and hybrid
learning models illustrate how learner needs are being met.

?        Cultural Proficiency - How is cultural proficiency developed in
the learner?  What are the elements of intercultural competence and how can
we assess them effectively? Proposals that focus on media literacy,
literature, the arts (dance, music, film, visual arts), and global
competence are included in this category.  In addition, sessions that
examine the relationships among cultural perspectives, products, and
practices demonstrate how cultural proficiency is addressed both within and
beyond the classroom.

?        Educational Policy and Leadership - What collaborative efforts
have led to effective advocacy for improving the prospects for language
funding, legislation, and policies that move the national agenda forward?
 What programs are developing leaders in our profession to ensure our
efficacy in these areas? Promoting language education from the local and
state levels to the national level is an important priority for the
language profession.  Examples of effective advocacy for language programs
are informative for others facing similar threats to their programs.
Proposals that focus on professional issues from language advocacy to
leadership development are included in this category.

Anne Arundel Community College is seeking qualified instructors for an
intensive summer STARTALK Arabic program entitled "Launching into Arabic
Learning and Teaching Program 2013."  The student component of the program
is designed for high school and college level students and will be held  at
the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD from June 24 - July 19, 2013,
pending final approvals. A two week intensive teacher training program will
be incorporated into the program immediately prior to the start of the
student program (June 10-21, 2013) and is  required for all instructors. We
are seeking dynamic lead instructors for beginning Novice level Arabic and
advanced Novice level Arabic. Courses are heavily focused on the
development of communicative Arabic language skills.

Pay is a competitive stipend.

Instructors must have minimum of a Bachelor?s degree and advanced level of
Arabic proficiency. Two year?s classroom experience using communicative
methodologies to teach in highly interactive classroom environments
preferred. Master's degree in Arabic or Education preferred.

U.S. Citizenship preferred due to Department of Navy security procedures.

Meeting Description:

Following up on a scientific workshop originally hosted at the Institut f?r
Afrikanistik, Universit?t zu K?ln, Germany (April 6-7, 2010), TASIA2 will
be hosted by the Universit? libre de Bruxelles (ULB). The workshop will
continue to explore different aspects of the use of Arabic based script for
the writing of languages in Africa, apart from Arabic, which is also known
as Ajami.

Please note: There will be no conference fee. The organizers will offer two
lunches during the conference, as well as an ending cocktail. Costs of
accommodation & travel must be covered by the participants themselves, but
the organizers will try to assist in finding transport & accommodation to
the venue.

Call for Papers:

We invite papers in English or French which discuss the use of such scripts
and orthographies within their socio-cultural context with a focus on
linguistic, socio-linguistic, or psycholinguistic aspects, of both current
and past use.

We particularly welcome any papers with a comparative approach as well as
papers, which point to or summarize tentative sub-fields of research, which
could produce synergetic effects through collaborative research on
different writing traditions. Specific questions could include:

New Insights into the Use and Spread of Arabic-based Scripts:

- How many languages use or have used Arabic-based script and how?
- When and for how long was Arabic-based script used for which languages,
and which languages employ it today or have started re-employing it?
- How many documents were produced?
- What are the contents and genres of such documents?
- How did these literacies come into being? Were those writing traditions
created on the basis of Arabic or another Arabic-based script tradition, or
were they created artificially?

Grammatological Properties of Arabic-based Scripts:

- How and why do these Arabic-based scripts deviate from the Arabic script
as used for Arabic?
- How does African use of Arabic-based script deviate from the use of
Arabic-based script for other languages beyond Arabic, such as in Europe,
the Americas, or Asia?
- Are any adaptations arbitrary or motivated?
- Are there areal trends or features among the adaptations and are these
possibly inspired by common regional, pan-African, Arabic, or other uses of
Arabic-based script?
- Can we pinpoint such areal features to common origins?
- Have these orthographies ever been standardized?
- If not, could the non-standardization possibly be motivated?
- How well do Arabic script-based orthographies represent their respective

- What is the relationship between written and spoken language?
- Do the written varieties differ from the spoken ones?
- Are any such possible differences between written and spoken varieties
stable across writers?
- How should we classify any possible differing written varieties?
- What is the relationship between actively competing writing systems?
- How does the competition between writing systems interact with the
language varieties of the written texts?
- To what extent are or have such writing traditions been used within
specific contexts or domains of communication? Have these writing systems
been used beyond the individual or religious domain, such as at
state-level, in political contexts, for advertising, in book publishing or
newspapers, on mobile phones or using computer interfaces?

Aspects of Applied Linguistics of Arabic-based Script:

- What is the relationship between literacy in Arabic-based scripts and
Islamic Educational Systems?
- What is the relevance of literacy in Arabic-based script in the context
of general literacy in Africa?
- What is the relevance of literacy in Arabic-based script in the context
of language strengthening & language revitalization?
- How do current high-level regional language development policies and
strategies deal with and affect the use of Arabic-based script?
- What is the role of religious institutions (Islamic, Christian and
others) on the use and spread of Arabic-based script?
- What is the role of technology in the context of Arabic-based script? Is
it being represented in handwriting only, or are texts also typeset
manually or represented in digital media, such as using computers, in text
messaging, or on the Internet?

Identifying Areas of Future Research in the Context of Arabic-based Script:

- What can we learn from the study of Arabic-based script, beyond the
intrinsic data?
- Should certain writing traditions be prioritized over others due to
cultural change?
- In which fields of research could we expect synergetic effects from
collaborative research?

In the concluding discussions, we would like to discuss in particular the
scope, range, timeframe, and possibilities of funding for possible
collaborative research between participants as well as further colleagues
in the field.

The symposium will be accompanied by an exhibition of some exemplary
manuscripts, which should demonstrate the range and scope of these writing
systems for general audiences. For this we would welcome any submissions of
digital copies of manuscripts, which are free for rights and whose quality
would suffice for reproduction in larger formats, together with brief
comment about the contents. For any further questions, please contact the

Kindly submit summaries for suggested papers by email as Word (.doc /
.docx) or as PDF file totasia2 at tasia.org by January 30, 2013. The file
should contain your name, position at or affiliation with a university or
research team, as well as an abstract for the talk itself. The entire text
of the file including references must not exceed 250 words. Results of the
selection process will be announced by email by February 20, 2013.
