Herewith some impressions (and I realize I may well be misinformed or under-informed, so I look forward to the final listing you compile from the replies by other list-members): Overview - I know of no deliberate, full-blown **dialect-only** or **dialect-prevalent** Arabic programs at either the undergraduate or graduate levels at institutions in the US or Canada. Much the same situation seems prevalent at institutions in UK, although I have heard of occasional offerings by SOAS in low-density dialects of Arabic (and preliterate non-Arabic languages of South Arabia) to prepare doctoral students outbound to various host countries to do their field research and thus they need better-than-superficial skills in conversability, linguistics, or ethnography. The Arabic language programs with which I am familiar are based on each building and maintaining a strong foundation in MSA. Dialects seem introduced, if at all, considerably later in a program and as almost-random offerings or occasional electives. The "big three" (especially in US Government linguist circles) Arabic dialects have been Egyptian (Cairene), Syrian (Shaamii) and Iraqi (Baghdadi). Institutions in the US which offer some courses in selected Arabic dialects include: [1] Georgetown - Egyptian, Syrian, Iraq, Maghrebi (FWIW, the library there inherited -- from CAL when it closed its library before its move from VA into DC -- some excellent, if not unique by now, descriptive pubs for self-training on Libyan coastal and rural dialects. Done under contract by some US universities which hosted groups of Libyan students and engaged them as respondents, their design and contents were very functional and intended for [ahem] field use by international aid workers and technicians, such as USAID employees and the like. Those were/are "oldies but goldies" in my opinion, since there is so little material around in English, Arabic, French, Russian, Italian or other languages about Libyan Arabic.) [2] U Michigan - Iraqi (at least) Ernest McCarus would probably be the most-knowledgeable person there for details on the status of those offerings. [3] U of Arizona - Gulf [Emirati] Arabic, taught mostly by Hamdy Qafisheh (if he is still teaching there). I think he tried to set up some similar introductory courses there in Yemeni (Sana'ni) Arabic, but that did not materialize due to low, or no, interest and enrollment sufficient to make a class. [4] The U of Texas at Austin - various dialects; ask Kristan Brustad. [5] Florida State U - Iraqi (might be U of Southern Florida instead) [6] A small university in Montana with a faculty member originally from Yemen (I can track down the details). He teaches basic undergrad classes in MSA and graduate linguistics seminars on Arabic dialectology, contrastive linguistics & diglossia. He can develop and deliver detailed descriptive courses about the major local dialects in Yemen on request (he mentioned that no request from anywhere has appeared to date). ----------------------------------------------------------- FYI, the DLIFLC at Presidio of Monterey has been expanding its offerings of Arabic dialects [albeit only for familiarization or transition, apparently] in Yemeni (Sana'ani, not on Adeni or Hadarami), Maghrebi, and Sudanese (I surmise Khartoumi). [I was contacted earlier this year about becoming an over-the-phone tester for Yemeni and Sudanese. I asked what materials are being used or were under development; the reply about the work underway there sounded chaotic and in "patchwork" mode due to tight time limits. I surmise those dialect packages [for lack of a more-elegant descriptor] are either: -- [1] (this is only a "maybe" speculation) 14-week add-on portions integrated during the last phases of the current 67-week resident basic Arabic language [MSA-based] course there, or -- [2] they are "stand alone" __i.e. "Headstart"-type__ familiarization-focused, multimedia modules, exportable to US military units located elsewhere. ----------------------------------------------------------- Hope this helps. I am conducting a qualitative research study to assess current attitudes among college-level Arabic teachers towards the integration of spoken Arabic with MSA in the first semester Arabic classroom, including regular use of spoken Arabic as the language of instruction. This is notably the method exemplified in such teaching packages as the 3rd edition of the Alif Baa and Al-Kitaab fii Ta'allum al-'Arabiyya by K. Brustad, M. Al-Batal and A. Al-Tonsi; and also Living Arabic: A Comprehensive Introductory Course, by M. Younes and M. Garen. I am looking for two groups: 1) Teachers who have practical experience applying the integrated approach in introductory Arabic courses and can speak to its pros and cons, and; 2) Teachers who, being aware of these methods, have expressly chosen not to employ them out of opposition to the integrated approach. APTLII is an eight-week intensive summer language immersion program for undergraduates, graduate students, and professionals. Outside of the classroom, students commit to using their target language at all times - in their shared living space on campus, at meals, and at co-curricular activities that combine to create a language immersion experience. Herewith some impressions (and I realize I may well be misinformed or under-informed, so I look forward to the final listing you compile from the replies by other list-members): Overview - I know of no deliberate, full-blown **dialect-only** or **dialect-prevalent** Arabic programs at either the undergraduate or graduate levels at institutions in the US or Canada. Much the same situation seems prevalent at institutions in UK, although I have heard of occasional offerings by SOAS in low-density dialects of Arabic (and preliterate non-Arabic languages of South Arabia) to prepare doctoral students outbound to various host countries to do their field research and thus they need better-than-superficial skills in conversability, linguistics, or ethnography. The Arabic language programs with which I am familiar are based on each building and maintaining a strong foundation in MSA. Dialects seem introduced, if at all, considerably later in a program and as almost-random offerings or occasional electives. The "big three" (especially in US Government linguist circles) Arabic dialects have been Egyptian (Cairene), Syrian (Shaamii) and Iraqi (Baghdadi). Institutions in the US which offer some courses in selected Arabic dialects include: [1] Georgetown - Egyptian, Syrian, Iraq, Maghrebi (FWIW, the library there inherited -- from CAL when it closed its library before its move from VA into DC -- some excellent, if not unique by now, descriptive pubs for self-training on Libyan coastal and rural dialects. Done under contract by some US universities which hosted groups of Libyan students and engaged them as respondents, their design and contents were very functional and intended for [ahem] field use by international aid workers and technicians, such as USAID employees and the like. Those were/are "oldies but goldies" in my opinion, since there is so little material around in English, Arabic, French, Russian, Italian or other languages about Libyan Arabic.) [2] U Michigan - Iraqi (at least) Ernest McCarus would probably be the most-knowledgeable person there for details on the status of those offerings. [3] U of Arizona - Gulf [Emirati] Arabic, taught mostly by Hamdy Qafisheh (if he is still teaching there). I think he tried to set up some similar introductory courses there in Yemeni (Sana'ni) Arabic, but that did not materialize due to low, or no, interest and enrollment sufficient to make a class. [4] The U of Texas at Austin - various dialects; ask Kristan Brustad. [5] Florida State U - Iraqi (might be U of Southern Florida instead) [6] A small university in Montana with a faculty member originally from Yemen (I can track down the details). He teaches basic undergrad classes in MSA and graduate linguistics seminars on Arabic dialectology, contrastive linguistics & diglossia. He can develop and deliver detailed descriptive courses about the major local dialects in Yemen on request (he mentioned that no request from anywhere has appeared to date). ----------------------------------------------------------- FYI, the DLIFLC at Presidio of Monterey has been expanding its offerings of Arabic dialects [albeit only for familiarization or transition, apparently] in Yemeni (Sana'ani, not on Adeni or Hadarami), Maghrebi, and Sudanese (I surmise Khartoumi). [I was contacted earlier this year about becoming an over-the-phone tester for Yemeni and Sudanese. I asked what materials are being used or were under development; the reply about the work underway there sounded chaotic and in "patchwork" mode due to tight time limits. I surmise those dialect packages [for lack of a more-elegant descriptor] are either: -- [1] (this is only a "maybe" speculation) 14-week add-on portions integrated during the last phases of the current 67-week resident basic Arabic language [MSA-based] course there, or -- [2] they are "stand alone" __i.e. "Headstart"-type__ familiarization-focused, multimedia modules, exportable to US military units located elsewhere. ----------------------------------------------------------- Hope this helps. I am conducting a qualitative research study to assess current attitudes among college-level Arabic teachers towards the integration of spoken Arabic with MSA in the first semester Arabic classroom, including regular use of spoken Arabic as the language of instruction. This is notably the method exemplified in such teaching packages as the 3rd edition of the Alif Baa and Al-Kitaab fii Ta'allum al-'Arabiyya by K. Brustad, M. Al-Batal and A. Al-Tonsi; and also Living Arabic: A Comprehensive Introductory Course, by M. Younes and M. Garen. I am looking for two groups: 1) Teachers who have practical experience applying the integrated approach in introductory Arabic courses and can speak to its pros and cons, and; 2) Teachers who, being aware of these methods, have expressly chosen not to employ them out of opposition to the integrated approach. Papers are invited on topics that deal with theoretical and applied issues of Arabic Linguistics. Research in the following areas of Arabic linguistics is encouraged: ? linguistic analysis(phonology,morphology, syntax, semantics), ? sociolinguistics, ? psycholinguistics, ? discourse analysis, ? historical linguistics, ? corpus linguistics, ? computational linguistics, ? language acquisition, ? neurolinguistics. Persons interested in presenting papers are requested to submit a one-page abstract giving the title of the paper, a brief statement of the topic, and a summary clearly stating how the topic will be developed (the reasoning, data, or experimental results to be presented). The workshop will continue to explore different aspects of the use of Arabic based script for the writing of languages in Africa, apart from Arabic, which is also known as Ajami. Please note: There will be no conference fee. The organizers will offer two lunches during the conference, as well as an ending cocktail. Costs of accommodation & travel must be covered by the participants themselves, but the organizers will try to assist in finding transport & accommodation to the venue. Call for Papers: We invite papers in English or French which discuss the use of such scripts and orthographies within their socio-cultural context with a focus on linguistic, socio-linguistic, or psycholinguistic aspects, of both current and past use. We particularly welcome any papers with a comparative approach as well as papers, which point to or summarize tentative sub-fields of research, which could produce synergetic effects through collaborative research on different writing traditions. Specific questions could include: New Insights into the Use and Spread of Arabic-based Scripts: - How many languages use or have used Arabic-based script and how? - When and for how long was Arabic-based script used for which languages, and which languages employ it today or have started re-employing it? - How many documents were produced? - What are the contents and genres of such documents? - How did these literacies come into being? Were those writing traditions created on the basis of Arabic or another Arabic-based script tradition, or were they created artificially? Grammatological Properties of Arabic-based Scripts: - How and why do these Arabic-based scripts deviate from the Arabic script as used for Arabic? - How does African use of Arabic-based script deviate from the use of Arabic-based script for other languages beyond Arabic, such as in Europe, the Americas, or Asia? - Are any adaptations arbitrary or motivated? - Are there areal trends or features among the adaptations and are these possibly inspired by common regional, pan-African, Arabic, or other uses of Arabic-based script? - Can we pinpoint such areal features to common origins? - Have these orthographies ever been standardized? - If not, could the non-standardization possibly be motivated? - How well do Arabic script-based orthographies represent their respective language(s)? - Can all phonemes be represented and how ambiguous are these representations? Sociolinguistic Properties of Arabic-based Scripts: - What is the relationship between written and spoken language? - Do the written varieties differ from the spoken ones? - Are any such possible differences between written and spoken varieties stable across writers? - How should we classify any possible differing written varieties? - What is the relationship between actively competing writing systems? - How does the competition between writing systems interact with the language varieties of the written texts? - To what extent are or have such writing traditions been used within specific contexts or domains of communication? Have these writing systems been used beyond the individual or religious domain, such as at state-level, in political contexts, for advertising, in book publishing or newspapers, on mobile phones or using computer interfaces? Aspects of Applied Linguistics of Arabic-based Script: - What is the relationship between literacy in Arabic-based scripts and Islamic Educational Systems? - What is the relevance of literacy in Arabic-based script in the context of general literacy in Africa? - What is the relevance of literacy in Arabic-based script in the context of language strengthening & language revitalization? - How do current high-level regional language development policies and strategies deal with and affect the use of Arabic-based script? - What is the role of religious institutions (Islamic, Christian and others) on the use and spread of Arabic-based script? - What is the role of technology in the context of Arabic-based script? Is it being represented in handwriting only, or are texts also typeset manually or represented in digital media, such as using computers, in text messaging, or on the Internet? Identifying Areas of Future Research in the Context of Arabic-based Script: - What can we learn from the study of Arabic-based script, beyond the intrinsic data? - Should certain writing traditions be prioritized over others due to cultural change? - In which fields of research could we expect synergetic effects from collaborative research? In the concluding discussions, we would like to discuss in particular the scope, range, timeframe, and possibilities of funding for possible collaborative research between participants as well as further colleagues in the field. The symposium will be accompanied by an exhibition of some exemplary manuscripts, which should demonstrate the range and scope of these writing systems for general audiences. For this we would welcome any submissions of digital copies of manuscripts, which are free for rights and whose quality would suffice for reproduction in larger formats, together with brief comment about the contents.
