Dear List Members:
I have a couple of questions concerning choice of texts for teaching and
testing, and item writing in a placement test in AFL:
1. When we choose an article from a newspaper for teaching or testing, do
we have to omit the names of personalities so that it can be used more
than once or do we have to keep the names and in that way we are
respecting the authenticity of the text.
2. In a multiple choice, how many choices should be given to students (3,
4, or 5)
3. An item like the one below testing the grammatical knowledge of the
student has four choices; however, the last choice is a mistake while 1
and 3 are correct but in other contexts. Shall we keep number four as a
choice, or is there any sound reason that it should be changed on the
basis that it is a mistake?
Q1: Complete the sentences with the correct answer
 .......................يعمل والدي في
□ الشركة كبيرة
□ شركة كبيرة
 □شركة الكبيرة
 شركة كبير□
I hope that we can discuss placement tests, their importance in
assessment, and best practices in designing them
