Cheers, Abu Sammy -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) Date: 03 Oct 2012 From:kassem wahba Subject:Meaning of Near Native Proficiency for MSA Dear David, The issue you raised is an important one in both applied and theoretical linguistics. The term near-native speaker or native speaker is mentioned a lot but nobody knows what this term means. Aside then the few people, like Dil Parkinson, who attempt to explore what native Egyptians know of MSA, nobody,as far as I know, attempts to examine this issue empirically. ACTFL and the Common European Framework mention it in terms of the foreign language learner's performance and our colleagues who revised the ACTFL guidelines (for Arabic) recently posted functions to be done by the near-native speaker in MSA without taking the time to examine what does the native or near-speaker do in MSA in terms of language use. It is obvious empirical research based on quantitative data collection and analysis is hard work and time consuming. The same question was raised in English by our colleague: JUDITH E. LISKIN–GASPARRO who wrote the following article on this issue. 1999*** What is a near-native speaker? Perspectives of job seekers and search committees in Spanish (with Dale A. Koike). (Which were good-quality printed books, but in dialect.) I found that it was much more effective to use workers on Amazon Turk for this kind of work. I put up the material I needed transcribed, with each page as a separate 'hit' which paid $0.20. The work was done very quickly (all the hits had been completed in a few hours), and the batches that I accepted had almost perfect accuracy. I don't know how many pages you have to do, and so if this would be cost prohibitive at even such a low rate, but I had several hundred pages transcribed this way with great success. Even in the most formal situations, highly educated native speakers can always speak a form of Arabic that includes a great deal of colloquial syntax and morphology. Of course, some native speakers are indeed proficient in MSA, but I think these are a very small minority, perhaps consisting mainly of "professional MSA speakers" such as Arabic teachers. Traditionally, most research in the field of speech technology has been conducted in very few languages such as English, French, Spanish or Chinese. Recently, many researchers from Arab world and worldwide, have been interested in Arabic Natural Language Processing (NLP). Several improvements have been achieved for various language processing components (e.g. morphological analysis, parsing, named entities recognition, audio transcription, acoustic model, language model, phonetic dictionaries, continuous speech recognition, etc), which involved Classical Arabic, Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), and Colloquial Arabic. We invite submissions for this special session on Arabic Natural Language Processing: Algorithms, Resources, Tools, Techniques and Applications, as part of the First International Conference on Communications, Signal Processing, and their Applications (ICCSPA’13), Sharjah, UAE. The focus of this special session is to provide an overview of the state-of-the-art, explore new directions and emerging trends, exchange information regarding Arabic language processing and their applications, evaluation methodologies and tools, ongoing and planned activities. Algorithms, resources, technologies and applications for processing text, speech and multimodalities are encouraged. In addition, papers integrating speech and/or multimodal with written resources are welcomed. The aim of this special session is to bring together researchers with a generic interest on Arabic NLP to raise awareness of different perspectives and practices, and to identify some common themes. We therefore welcome submissions on a range of topics of interest, including but not limited to: · Guidelines, standards, best practices and models for Arabic NLP interoperability. · Methodologies and tools for annotating Arabic NLP resources. · Methodologies and tools for the extraction and acquisition of knowledge. · Issues in, and evaluation of, morphological analysers, PoS taggers, and parsers. · Issues in, and evaluation of, machine translation. · Text-mining, stylometry, and authorship attribution. · Corpus query languages and tools. · Dictionaries, thesaurai, Wordnet, ontologies, and knowledge representation. · Terminology. · Arabic speech recognition and understanding. · Arabic acoustic and language models. · Arabic phonetic dictionaries and transcriptions. · Arabic Speech Synthesis. · Emotion recognition using Arabic speech and/or multimodal biometrics. · Speaker recognition and verification using Arabic speech and/or multimodal biometrics. · Arabic language resources and corpora (spoken, written, etc), and tools. · Integration between (multilingual) LRs, ontologies and Semantic Web technologies. · Integration between (multilingual) LRs and multimedia technologies. · Metadata descriptions of LRs and metadata for semantic/content markup. PAPER SUBMISSION: The session solicits original, unpublished, and high-quality research papers. The authors are invited to submit their contributions formatted as IEEE double columns. All submitted papers will be refereed by at least two reviewers for quality, correctness, originality, and relevance. All accepted papers will be published in the conference proceeding and will be included in IEEE Xplore digital library. Selected papers from the ICCSPA'13 will be published in one or more special issues of reputed journals. For those who are unaware of Asymptote, it’s a free online translation journal that has featured poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and visual art from more than 70 countries and over 50 different languages. Their new issue features new poems by Ruth Padel and Cole Swensen, new Urdu fiction by Aamer Hussein, a video by Iraqi artist Sadik Kwaish Alfraji, an excerpt of Paco Roca's award winning Spanish comic "Wrinkles," the second installment of the Sinophone "20 under 40" Feature, and a PEN Translation Grant winner spotlight with an excerpt from the journals of Hervé Guibert. For its first special feature in the April 2013 issue, Asymptote is inviting submissions of fiction by African writers, whether translated or in English, as well as writings on the subject of Africa as a place and an idea. Does it make sense to talk about such a thing as Africa? Is it a place or an idea? If it is an idea, is it merely so? As a concept, is it limiting or liberating? The journal is looking for work from and about Africa that goes beyond the anthropological, the idealizing, and the dystopic: work that takes nothing, even the substantiality of its subject, for granted. Submissions of poetry and essays by African writers are also very much encouraged, and will be considered with higher priority in the regular sections. E-mail: m.abushariah at ju.edu.jo , m.abushariah at gmail.com ======================================================================== A Special Session on Arabic Natural Language Processing: Algorithms, Resources, Tools, Techniques and Applications In conjunction with the First International Conference on Communications, Signal Processing, and their Applications (ICCSPA'13) Sharjah, UAE, February 12 - 14, 2013 https://www2.aus.edu/conferences/iccspa/index.html AIMS AND SCOPE: Arabic language is the largest Semitic language which is still in existence, one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, and one of the six official languages of the United Nations (UN). We therefore welcome submissions on a range of topics of interest, including but not limited to: • Guidelines, standards, best practices and models for Arabic NLP interoperability. • Methodologies and tools for annotating Arabic NLP resources. • Methodologies and tools for the extraction and acquisition of knowledge. • Issues in, and evaluation of, morphological analysers, PoS taggers, and parsers. • Issues in, and evaluation of, machine translation. • Text-mining, stylometry, and authorship attribution. • Corpus query languages and tools. • Dictionaries, thesaurai, Wordnet, ontologies, and knowledge representation. • Terminology. • Arabic speech recognition and understanding. • Arabic acoustic and language models. • Arabic phonetic dictionaries and transcriptions. • Arabic Speech Synthesis. • Emotion recognition using Arabic speech and/or multimodal biometrics. • Speaker recognition and verification using Arabic speech and/or multimodal biometrics. • Arabic language resources and corpora (spoken, written, etc), and tools. • Integration between (multilingual) LRs, ontologies and Semantic Web technologies. • Integration between (multilingual) LRs and multimedia technologies. • Metadata descriptions of LRs and metadata for semantic/content markup. Authors are kindly required to follow the (ICCSPA'13) submission procedure with an email notification to the session organizers (m.abushariah at ju.edu.jo and sawalha.majdi at gmail.com) including the paper ID and the paper title. IMPORTANT DATES: • Deadline for paper submission: October 31, 2012 • Notification of acceptance: November 15, 2012 • Deadline for camera-ready submission: December 15, 2012 • Conference date: February 12-14, 2013 SPECIAL SESSION ORGANIZERS: Dr. Mohammad A. LISKIN?GASPARRO who wrote the following article on this issue. I have quite a few Egyptian friends who are native speakers of Arabic, and have degrees from Egyptian state universities, but have very low proficiency in spoken MSA. As far as I can tell, for most educated Egyptians, there is simply no socio-linguistic context that calls for "correct" spoken MSA. We invite submissions for this special session on Arabic Natural Language Processing: Algorithms, Resources, Tools, Techniques and Applications, as part of the First International Conference on Communications, Signal Processing, and their Applications (ICCSPA?13), Sharjah, UAE. We therefore welcome submissions on a range of topics of interest, including but not limited to: ? Guidelines, standards, best practices and models for Arabic NLP interoperability. ? Methodologies and tools for annotating Arabic NLP resources. ? Methodologies and tools for the extraction and acquisition of knowledge. ? Issues in, and evaluation of, morphological analysers, PoS taggers, and parsers. ? Issues in, and evaluation of, machine translation. ? Text-mining, stylometry, and authorship attribution. ? Corpus query languages and tools. ? Dictionaries, thesaurai, Wordnet, ontologies, and knowledge representation. ? Terminology. ? Arabic speech recognition and understanding. ? Arabic acoustic and language models. ? Arabic phonetic dictionaries and transcriptions. ? Arabic Speech Synthesis. ? Emotion recognition using Arabic speech and/or multimodal biometrics. ? Speaker recognition and verification using Arabic speech and/or multimodal biometrics. ? Arabic language resources and corpora (spoken, written, etc), and tools. ? For those who are unaware of Asymptote, it?s a free online translation journal that has featured poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and visual art from more than 70 countries and over 50 different languages. Their new issue features new poems by Ruth Padel and Cole Swensen, new Urdu fiction by Aamer Hussein, a video by Iraqi artist Sadik Kwaish Alfraji, an excerpt of Paco Roca's award winning Spanish comic "Wrinkles," the second installment of the Sinophone "20 under 40" Feature, and a PEN Translation Grant winner spotlight with an excerpt from the journals of Herv? Guibert. We invite submissions for this special session on Arabic Natural Language Processing: Algorithms, Resources, Tools, Techniques and Applications, as part of the First International Conference on Communications, Signal Processing, and their Applications (ICCSPA?13), Sharjah, UAE. ?
