Subject:AUB jobs in Lit and Islamics

The Department of Arabic and Near Eastern Languages at the American
University of Beirut seeks applicants in the fields of Modern Arabic
Literature and Literary Theory (with special emphasis on prose
genres), and Classical Islamic thought in its literary dimensions to
begin September 1, 2013.

For the position in Modern Arabic Literature and Literary Theory,
applicants should be well versed in both Arab and Western classical
heritages, including Western literary theory.

For the position in Classical Islamic thought in its literary
dimensions, candidates should be able to design and teach advanced
courses in one or more the following areas: Islamic theology and its
Greco-Arabic background, Qur’anic and Sufi studies, as well as more
basic courses in other fields of classical Islamic thought such as
heresiography and classical literary theory.

The language of instruction in this department (and only in this
department) is Modern Standard Arabic, but mastery of English is an
essential requirement.  A reading knowledge of French and/or German is
highly desirable.
Applicants must be able to teach, in Arabic, service courses in Arabic
grammar and modern Arabic thought to native speakers of Arabic. Solid
knowledge of the Arabic language and heritage and training in modern
Western methodologies are essential.

Applicants must have a PhD upon appointment. Rank will normally be at
the Assistant Professor level; usual contracts are initially for four
years. The department offers BA and MA degrees, and a PhD in Arabic
Language and Literature.
