Subject: Using 'Berber'

Most scholars, who have been educated in French, prefer the term Tamazight
to the term Berber because for them the term Berber is derogatory (deriving
from the Latin word barbaros). However, the term Berber does not have or
bear any negative connotations in the Anglo-Saxon literature on Berber. The
term Tamazight also refers to a variety of Berber and its use excludes
other Berber varieties such as Tarifit and Tashlhit. Therefore, the term
Berber is more general, neutral and still in use.
