Subject:U of Arizona Middle East Language Workshop

Registration is open for the upcoming Middle East language workshop to be
held in Tucson, AZ from March 29 to 31, 2013. The Center for Middle Eastern
Studies (CMES) at the University of Arizona will be hosting the event.
The 2013 Workshop will explore "Engaging Language and Culture through
Innovative Technologies" looking at various effective ways in which
technology and especially computer-assisted language learning enhance,
accelerate and support language learning and intercultural competence in
students of all levels of proficiency in Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, and
Turkish.
Dr. Gerald Lampe will give the keynote talk to open the workshop. His
presentation will focus on the new Interagency Language Roundtable
descriptions for competence in intercultural communication. In particular,
he will discuss their application to Arabic and other Middle Eastern
linguacultures.
Associate Director of the Berkeley Language Center (BLC), Dr. Mark Kaiser,
will present a 2-hour hands-on training on how to use the BLC’s Foreign
Film Clip database.
Dr. Sonia Shiri, Assistant Professor in the School of Middle Eastern and
North African Studies at the University of Arizona. Dr. Shiri will offer a
closing plenary address on “Developing Multi-literacies through Web-based
Learning."
Registration fees (available through March 14, 2013):
Faculty/staff at Western Consortium* member institution ($75)
Faculty/staff at non-member institution ($150)
Student, University of Arizona (no charge; panels only, does not include
reception or meals)
Student, University of Arizona ($50)
Student, other ($75)
Note: On-Site registration is $180
*The Western Consortium of Middle East Centers includes: Portland State
University, UC Berkeley, UCLA, U of Arizona, UT Austin, and University of
Washington
Fees include reception and dinner on Friday, March 29; lunch on March 30;
and breakfast on March 31.
