*AAPTIS 412: Intensive Advanced Business Arabic*

*** University of Michigan, Summer Language Institute*

*June 27-August 13, 2013*

AAPTIS 412 is an 8-credit intensive course equivalent in content,
objectives, requirements and credits to the non intensive two semester
sequence AAPTIS 409-410. This course is offered to students, members of the
business community and government personnel who have completed at least two
years of Arabic and wish to continue Arabic study for career and
professional purposes. It provides opportunities for the study and analysis
of various aspects of formal business correspondence, economic reports,
Islamic banking and finance, foreign investment in the Arab world, as well
as business agreements and trade contracts through assigned readings, video
presentations and videoconferencing exchanges with students and faculty in
Arab universities. The course follows the communicative-proficiency,
learner-centered approach to language learning and teaching. Daily
activities involve extensive oral and written practice, group interactions,
debates and role-playing. Grades are based on class attendance and
participation, monthly tests and a final examination. The class meets five
days per week, four hours per day for 8 credit hours and is entirely
conducted in Arabic. Students who successfully complete this sequence will
be able to perform well in a variety of situations, both social and
business. .*In addition, the course features:*

   - An extra hour in the afternoon twice a week for conversation practice,


   - Cultural trips to Arab /Muslim museums, book stores and places of
   interest,


   - Occasional lectures in Arabic on topics of interest to students,
   delivered by guest visiting scholars from Arab universities on UM campus
   during summer terms.

*NOTE*: Students who successfully complete this course will be allowed to
enroll in AAPTIS 504 Advanced Arabic Media offered at UMin Fall 2013.
