About the Center for International Learning in Oman: CIL invites you to learn and grow through study in the Sultanate of Oman, an Italy-sized nation on the Arabian Sea. For years students have found this an ideal setting for their international study, a nation of warm and welcoming people who practice a form of Islam - Ibadhism - that practices tolerance and acceptance of others. CIL provides students with the learning experiences needed to become world citizens. Comprised of Americans and Omanis with PhD and Masters Degrees, the CIL faculty facilitates experiential education, cultural exchange, and comparative studies to deepen understanding, promote common interests, and explore the shared aspirations of people from different cultures. CIL offers students the chance of a lifetime--the kind of understanding that yields lasting friendship, tolerance and mutual respect. CIL offers all three levels of Modern Standard Arabic (beginner, intermediate, and advanced), as well as Omani dialect, media Arabic, and skills classes. Arabic is one of the fastest growing languages learned by students in the U.S. Known for its fascinating complexity, it is a language of literature, poetry and elegant calligraphy. Arabic also is a language that encompasses deep and abiding cultural traditions, making its study a rich and rewarding learning experience. CIL utilizes Al Kitaab fii Taalum Al-Arabiya, Part 1 and 2, as well as other materials developed by the teaching faculty. Arabic instruction at CIL covers media literacy, comprehension, and active use of lughat-al-muthaqqafeen ("educated speech"), as used on Al Jazeera. All of CIL's Arabic language classes are taught by native Omani instructors trained in Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language (TAFL). Students also can elect to enhance language learning through informal sessions with an individual Omani Language Partner (i.e., chatting, shopping at the souk, cooking, going to movies and other local events, such as village weddings). About the August Arabic Program: CIL is offering a 3-week Arabic program from August 18 – September 5, 2013. Instruction is offered at Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced levels, and includes Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) grammar, media literacy, skills (reading, writing, listening), conversation (MSA and Omani dialect), and utilizes peer facilitators (Omani language partners). The program includes 6 hours of classes 5 days a week, with class sizes typically between 5 and 8 students. August Arabic Program Cost: Tuition only - $2,455 In-country package (includes: tuition, shared modern hotel suite or flat, half board (i.e., weekday continental breakfast and lunch), and weekday ground transportation) - $2,900 Application Form: Applications are available through the link below or can be obtained by emailing Megan Geissler at Megan at ncusar.org. http://ncusar.org/programs/NCUSAR-CIL-2013-August-Application.pdf Students should email completed applications to Arabic_August at omancenter.orgalong with a copy of the photo page of their passport. Larry Brown Subject:Study Abroad in Oman Dear University Colleagues: I am sending this communication given growing concern about student safety in countries of the region, now including Turkey, Lebanon and even Jordan. We see this concern through consistent media coverage, and also through the notable increase of students seeking to study with us in Oman-- as well as from universities that have asked if we can now accept more of their students this fall. Based on these requests, we have made plans to double our Study Abroad Program for this coming September (www.omancenter.org). But there is, of course a limit to what we can do, particularly in a relatively short period of time. And while we want to be as responsive as possible, I also am concerned that our efforts to accommodate not be at the expense of viable programs elsewhere. But violence in parts of the region is of obvious concern and the limitations it places on students who desire international study accrue to no one's long-term benefit. Many of you realize that Oman is welcoming and highly safe, with no student safety issues in eight years of study abroad so far. So this is our situation, and our desire to be helpful, albeit with limitations of practicality. I ask university program administrators seeking to re-direct students to Oman to contact me before the end of June, so we can have appropriate discussions and makes necessary plans to accommodate them at CIL. */About the Center for International Learning in Oman: /* CIL invites you to learn and grow through study in the Sultanate of Oman, an Italy-sized nation on the Arabian Sea. CIL utilizes /Al Kitaab fii Taalum Al-Arabiya/, Part 1, 2 and 3, as well as other materials developed by the teaching faculty. Students also enhance language learning through informal sessions with an Omani Language Partner. / /*/August Arabic Program Cost: /* * Tuition only - $2,455 * In-country package (includes: tuition, shared modern hotel suite or flat, half board (i.e., weekday continental breakfast and lunch), and weekday ground transportation) - $2,900 /*/* For More Information: */*_* *_**_*http://us4.campaign-**archive1.com/?u=**20643734fa86f8ae4195f1cae&id=* *a35e110cff&e=b41e74a82b *_*To apply:*/ Click here for an application. > Students should email completed applications toArabic_August at omancenter.org along with a copy of the photo page of their passport. We are pleased to announce that three of the four semesters of BYU Independent Study's online high school Arabic courses, updated for use with the third edition of the *Al-Kitaab* textbook series, are now available with the fourth soon to follow. Likewise our first semester university-level course (101) is now available online with 102 well on its way to completion. These courses make use of a Conversation Café that gives students the opportunity to speak with other students and teaching assistants to practice what they are learning. And we are in the process of adding suggestions from our Project Perseverance research to help parents assist their children in becoming more effective learners. We still have aid available for financially challenged high school students. And we are looking to do more one-day camps around the country. Spread the word, please. Many thanks! I mean a course book (or a Reader) to teach Arabic NOT with the aim of speaking MSA but only understanding and reading (authentic material, obviously) from the very first beginning. The subject could be also Literature, or any other subject. I already came across a book with this purpose but the variety employed was ESA not MSA. The author’s contention throughout this work is to show that A and A-bar movement have different properties. Each of the different chapters may be self-contained part. Still, the common denominator to all of them is to support the claim that A-movement is not A-bar movement. The first chapter outlines the basic concepts underlying the Minimalist Program adopted in this book. The chapter begins with a demonstration of the problems that beset Government and Binding (GB) theory and provides an appropriate body of empirical evidence in favor of the properties of the A/A-bar positions within the framework of the MP. Chapter two outlines some salient properties of Standard Arabic. Special attention is given to word order and Standard Arabic morphology. Some previous accounts of word order are examined to show their limitations and support the alternative analysis the author provides. Chapter three explores in depth different types of A-bar movement such as topicalization, left dislocation, wh-movement and relative clauses. The major claim the author argues in this chapter is that all these types of movement involve a movement to a non L(lexically) related position. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Arabic-L: 26 Jun 2013 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... As part of this, I'm trying to pick a single Arabic word for the term "syntactic position". This is often used in traditional Arabic grammar, such as (ضمير متصل في محل رفع فاعل). The term I'm looking relates to function, syntactic role, position or place. I'd like to choose one word from the following three: 1. محل 2. موقع e.g. "mawqi' al-mubtada" 3. موضع e.g. "mawdi' fi al-kamal" I've noticed that in traditional analysis, the word "mahal" is used a lot, e.g. "fee mahal nasb". But it appears that term is used only when another word or phrase is occupying the position usually taken by another word. Are the other two terms better? My question in a nutshell is: What is the best word single to refer to the concept of "syntactic position" in traditional Arabic grammar? So far, I'm leaning towards using موقع for this term. Examples would be the positions of subject and predicate in nominative sentences, and the positions of verb, subject and object in verbal sentences Kais Dukes University of Leeds -------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Arabic-L: 26 Jun 2013 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... To celebrate this memorable event, the Leiden Institute for Area Studies and the Leiden University Centre for Linguistics will convene a conference that will bring together Arabicists, Semiticists, historians, and epigraphists to discuss original research on the pre- and early history of Arabic. Professor John Huehnergard (University of Texas, Austin) will deliver the keynote address entitled ‘Arabic in its Semitic Context.’ The rest of the congress details will be available (via the conference website) late September 2013. Call for Papers: The papers presented at this congress will be published in a volume commemorating this important anniversary. It is hoped that the 400th year of Arabic at Leiden will mark an important contribution to our understanding of Arabic in its earliest stages. We invite submissions on all topics dealing with the relationship between Arabic and other the Semitic and Afro-Asiatic languages. We especially encourage interdisciplinary approaches that combine the fields of linguistics/philology and history to shed light on problems such as the distribution of Arabic epigraphy, the development of the Arabic script, the language of the Qur’an, and the linguistic geography of pre-Islamic Arabic. These topics should only be considered as general guidelines and are not exhaustive. Any paper dealing with Arabic in its historical and linguistic context will be considered. We welcome abstracts for papers (not exceeding 2 pages) before 15 August 2013. Please do not forget to mention your institutional affiliation. Successful applicants will be informed early September 2013. Participants must register in order to take part in the conference. The registration fee is 50 euro. About the August Arabic Program: CIL is offering a 3-week Arabic program from August 18 ? September 5, 2013. */About the Center for International Learning in Oman: /* CIL invites you to learn and grow through study in the Sultanate of Oman, an Italy-sized nation on the Arabian Sea. CIL utilizes /Al Kitaab fii Taalum Al-Arabiya/, Part 1, 2 and 3, as well as other materials developed by the teaching faculty. These courses make use of a Conversation Caf? that gives students the opportunity to speak with other students and teaching assistants to practice what they are learning. And we are in the process of adding suggestions from our Project Perseverance research to help parents assist their children in becoming more effective learners. We still have aid available for financially challenged high school students. And we are looking to do more one-day camps around the country. Spread the word, please. Many thanks! The author?s contention throughout this work is to show that A and A-bar movement have different properties. This is often used in traditional Arabic grammar, such as (???? ???? ?? ??? ??? ????). The term I'm looking relates to function, syntactic role, position or place. I'd like to choose one word from the following three: 1. ??? 2. ???? e.g. "mawqi' al-mubtada" 3. ???? e.g. So far, I'm leaning towards using ???? for this term. Professor John Huehnergard (University of Texas, Austin) will deliver the keynote address entitled ?Arabic in its Semitic Context.? The rest of the congress details will be available (via the conference website) late September 2013. We especially encourage interdisciplinary approaches that combine the fields of linguistics/philology and history to shed light on problems such as the distribution of Arabic epigraphy, the development of the Arabic script, the language of the Qur?an, and the linguistic geography of pre-Islamic Arabic. Meals and drinks will be provided for on both congress days.
