The reason it is called علم النحو according to the Mauritanian scholar Ibn Bon is that the fourth Khalifa, Ali Ibn Abi Talib, may God be pleased with him, was teaching Abu Aswad Ad-duali أبو أسود الدؤلي what a noun (or اسم ), a verb ( or فعل ) and a particle ( or حرف) were.
