The successful <br>candidate must document high academic qualifications in Arabic<br>language and culture. The scholarly production may be in various fields<br>of Arabic studies: philology, linguistics, dialectology,<br>literature, religion, or history. A particular emphasis will be put on<br>research in Arabic culture and history, including Islamic studies or<br>philology. Knowledge of one or more Middle Eastern languages other than<br>Arabic will also be considered an advantage.<br><br>Arabic is taught at all levels up to Ph.D. It is also a component of a<br>Bachelor program in Middle Eastern studies, which includes<br>specializations in history, religion, archaeology and social<br>anthropology. Arabic is thus part of a wider research and teaching <br>milieu of Middle Eastern and Islamic studies at Bergen, with a focus <br>inter alia on Muslim Africa and the Sudan, Levantine studies and Sufism.<br>The successful candidate is expected to participate in the development<br>of this milieu.<br><br>The teaching language will normally be Norwegian. The successful <br>applicant must be able to teach in Norwegian or one of the other <br>Scandinavian languages within two years of his/her appointment.<br><br>If no applicant is qualified for a full professorship, the University <br>may consider appointing a candidate to the position of Associate <br>Professor. Applicants should state whether a position as Associate <br>Professor is of interest.
