Students will cover Alif Baa and 14<br>chapters of Al-Kitaab I. At the end of the six weeks, students will be able to<br>speak about themselves and environment and to hold conversations on a number of<br>simple topics; be able to read and understand texts on familiar topics; be able<br>to carry out written transactions connected to daily life; and have a greater<br>knowledge of and appreciation for Arab culture.<br>Prerequisite: None for the first semester; for the second semester, successful<br>completion of the first semester or the equivalent.<br>--------------------------------------------------------------------------<br>ARAB 133 (intermediate)<br>Course Description:<br>In this course, students will further their proficiency in reading, writing,<br>speaking, and listening, utilizing complex semantic and syntactic structures. <br>Students will continue with Al-kitaab I (chapters 15-20) and will cover up to<br>the end of chapter 4 of Al-Kitaab II. Students will be encouraged to<br>participate in discussions, discourse, and analysis, featuring historical,<br>geographic, and cultural topics specific to the Arab world. Multimedia material<br>is an integral part of the course. Moreover, this course will enable students to<br>read, discuss and translate Arabic newspapers and other materials related to the<br>religions, politics and economics of the Middle East. In addition, students are<br>given a special course in oral skills to improve their ability to discuss in<br>Arabic their background, future plans, and current political issues; to satisfy<br>everyday and professional needs; and to give short oral reports.
