Subject:Intensive Summer Language Institutes for Arabic Teachers
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: medium; white-space: normal; ">ntensive Summer Language Institutes for Chinese, Arabic and Russian<br>Teachers<br><br>This program is designed to strengthen critical need foreign language<br>instruction at U.S. schools by providing intermediate and advanced level<br>teachers of Arabic, Chinese, and Russian as a Foreign Language with the<br>opportunity for intensive language study abroad. The summer 2010 program<br>is open to current K-12 teachers as well as community college<br>instructors of Arabic, Chinese, and Russian; university students<br>enrolled in education programs intending to teach these languages are<br>also eligible to participate. The program is funded by the Bureau of<br>Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) of the U. S. Department of State,<br>and administered by American Councils for International Education<br>ACTR/ACCELS.<br><br>Program Benefits:<br>* Academic program in Changchun, China; Alexandria, Egypt; or Kazan,<br>Russia;<br>* Round-trip airfare;<br>* Housing and meals;<br>* Educational and cultural excursions;<br>* Peer tutors for conversation practice;<br>* Stipend for the purchase and shipping of teaching materials;<br>* Pre-departure orientation in Washington, D.C.;<br>* Visa support;<br>* Health insurance; and<br>* 10 graduate credit hours through Bryn Mawr College.<br><br>The program is open to educators who meet the following eligibility<br>requirements:<br>* Teach Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), or Russian as a Foreign Language in<br>a K-12 school, community college, or are enrolled in a program leading<br>to teaching of critical languages;<br>* Speak Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), or Russian at the intermediate or<br>advanced level;<br>* Are a non-native speaker of the target language: Arabic, Chinese<br>(Mandarin), or Russian. For participation in this program, a native<br>speaker is someone who finished high school (or equivalent) in an<br>Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), or Russian speaking country. A heritage<br>speaker is someone who speaks the target language at home, but has not<br>spent an extended period of time in a country where the primary language<br>is Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), or Russian.
