<span style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">My question in return would be which skill or aspects of knowledge are you referring to?</span><br style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px"><span style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">I'll assume you are talking about the language skills, e.g. reading, writing, listening and speaking.</span><br style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">

<span style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">The next level below is the detail (or learning objective).</span><br style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px"><span style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">If you want to monitor, assess, or have the students self-assess the learning objectives, you need some basis. Let's call it a Framework or set of rating scales.</span><br style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">

<span style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">A useful tool worth looking at may be the Common European Framework (CEFR). My understanding is that it has been used for Arabic language assessment.</span><br style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">

<span style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">The way you can help yourself ascertain whether an objective has been reached, is to create descriptors or narratives linked to the objective. You also need a test that is linked to the objective. Identify what you want to test, then create a way of testing/assessing for this. You can then ascertain how close or far the student is from the objective you were testing for.</span><br style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">

<span style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px"> How can assessing ILO's be done?</span><br style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px"><span style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">I've partly answered this above.</span><br style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">

<span style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">Before you create a test, or wish to assess a student, ask yourself what objective you are testing. Then decide on a task that tests that objective.</span><br style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">

<span style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">You then need to decide on descriptors which describe how well someone has done.</span><br style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px"><span style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">A common measure of language ability:</span><br style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">

<span style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">The CEFR could potentially be used to compare Arabic courses across the world. It's worth taking a closer look at, as work has already been carried out on this.</span><br style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">

<span style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">The CEFR has already been adapted to assess Arabic. I would suggest you get your university to invite the CEFR people to come and give you a workshop. In fact it could benefit the whole Arabic teaching, learning and assessment community.</span><br style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">
