Subject:<br><br><div style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">Hello,</div><div style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px"><br></div><div style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">I'm doing some writing that explains traditional Arabic grammar to a Western audience. As part of this, I'm trying to pick a single Arabic word for the term "syntactic position". This is often used in traditional Arabic grammar, such as (ضمير متصل في محل رفع فاعل). The term I'm looking relates to function, syntactic role, position or place. I'd like to choose one word from the following three:<br>

I've noticed that in traditional analysis, the word "mahal" is used a lot, e.g. "fee mahal nasb". But it appears that term is used only when another word or phrase is occupying the position usually taken by another word. Are the other two terms better?</div>

<div style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px"><br></div><div style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">My question in a nutshell is: What is the best word single to refer to the concept of "syntactic position" in traditional Arabic grammar?</div>

<div style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px"><br></div><div style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">So far, I'm leaning towards using موقع  for this term. Examples would be the positions of subject and predicate in nominative sentences, and the positions of verb, subject and object in verbal sentences</div>
