<span style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">The newest book in the Sahlawayhi series, The Arabic Alphabet, is already</span><br style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px"><span style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">out. It's based on the following principles:</span><br style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">

<span style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">1. Based on the philosophy that language learning/ teaching should start</span><br style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px"><span style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">orally, it introduces the letters without the diacritic marks in the first</span><br style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">

<span style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">stage. Students see pictures (all in color), they have their sounds and</span><br style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px"><span style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">they can read without the diacritic marks. So, the sounds will help them</span><br style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">

<span style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">understand and master the alphabet. Instead of going from the alphabet to</span><br style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px"><span style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">vocab. (unknown to unknown), they go from vocab./sound  to letters (known</span><br style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">

<span style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">to unknown).</span><br style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px"><span style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">2. In the second stage, when students can read & write the language they</span><br style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">

<span style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">already know, they will learn the diacritic marks in order to read & write</span><br style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px"><span style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">the language they don't know.</span><br style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">

<span style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">3. The  book starts explaining the principles of writing with the first</span><br style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px"><span style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">half of the alphabet only. Words chosen in this section are covered by the</span><br style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">

<span style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">first half of the alphabet. After mastering the first half, the second is</span><br style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px"><span style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">introduced.</span><br style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">

<span style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">4. The book separates printing/ beginners' style (naskh) from advanced hand</span><br style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px"><span style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">writing (ruq'a) so that students learn one style at a time.</span><br style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">

<span style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">5. The main type of exercises is tracing. Students trace the words in front</span><br style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px"><span style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">of pictures. Then, the order of pictures changes, and students are asked to</span><br style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">

<span style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">match words with pictures, which teaches the students to read the first</span><br style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px"><span style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">letter or two by eye, and then finish reading words using their background</span><br style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">

<span style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">knowledge.</span><br style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px"><span style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">6. This book can be used by children and adults, so long as they start</span><br style="font-family:arial,sans-serif;font-size:13px">
