Applied Linguistics PhD opportunities at the University of Birmingham
ESRC Midlands Graduate School DTP Open Competition

The Department of English Language and Applied Linguistics at the University of Birmingham encourages applications for ESRC studentships from applicants who are keen to pursue high-level doctoral studies in the field of Applied Linguistics.

The University of Birmingham is part of the ESRC Midlands Graduate School Doctoral Training Partnership with Aston University, the University of Leicester, the University of Loughborough, the University of Nottingham and the University of Warwick. Opportunities at the University of Birmingham include the approved pathway of Applied Linguistics.

We encourage applications that relate to the major research strengths of the Department: corpus linguistics, stylistics, discourse analysis, cognitive linguistics and psycholinguistics. We particularly welcome applications on the following topics:

* The acquisition and processing of idioms and figurative language
* Lexical and phraseological aspects of language impairment
* The application of cognitive linguistics and psycholinguistics to advertising and marketing research
* The application of cognitive and computational linguistics to the analysis of online review data (e.g. Yelp, IMDb)
* The application of genre analysis (and rhetoric) to business and organisational discourse
* Experimental approaches to critical discourse analysis
* The application of Construction Grammar to language teaching
*         Corpus-based language pedagogy
* Acquisition (L1 and L2) and the processing of argument structure

Candidates can apply for a range of awards (covering doctoral study only or both masters and doctoral study). All studentships can be offered on a full or part time basis. Please note that the scheme is very competitive and so applicants need to have an excellent academic record.

The closing date for applications is Tuesday 24 January 2017.
Interested students are encouraged to make contact with potential supervisors as soon as possible in order to start discussing their research projects.
