Dear colleagues,
We are developing a collective volume with the working title *South African
Political Discourses*. While we have already received a number of high
quality papers, we are sorely missing a contribution on the topic of
HIV/AIDS debate in South African political discourse. If you are a CD
analyst interested in writing a chapter on this topic, or know somebody who
would be, please contact us!

HIV is one on South Africa’s crisis areas, due to failure of the Health
Department to address it aggressively. Until 2008 it was hardly addressed
at all due to President Mbeki’s notion that ‘HIV does not cause AIDS’. The
backlog in treatment and the spread due to costs and lack of access to
proper medication has exasperated the issue. Finally the focus on poverty
stricken (mainly black) youth as behaving immorally, has added a racial
tone to the debate, thrusting blame at underdeveloped communities, and
lately asylum seekers as well. In summary then, government has not taken
responsibility for the issue of providing primary critical medication to
victims of AIDS. Additionally, rape as the prime perpetuator for the rapid
spreading of AIDS, has also not been researched adequately so far. The
discourses on AIDS in SA can be said to be avoidance, laying the blame at
the individual’s door, and shirking the social responsibility to protect
the vulnerable.

Please forward this message to anybody interested, and if you are
interested in proposing any other topic for this volume, do not hesitate to
contact us!

Many thanks,

Mima Dedaic and Liesel Hibbert
