Subscribers to CELTLING may be interested to know about a new book
published by Edinburgh University Press, Scotland, called _The Edinburgh
History of the Scots Language_ by Professor Charles Jones, Forbes Professor
of English Language at the University of Edinburgh.

Despite the central cultural and historical role of the Scots language, no
inclusive history had ever been written. This book is the first full scale
attempt to record the diachronic development of the language, and includes
extensive essays by some of the foremost international scholars of the
Scots Language. A huge book at over 600 pages, this is the essential work
of reference for those seeking the most recent and scholarly view of all
aspects of the language from the earliest times to the present day.
