This will probably also be of interest to CELTLING members.

Hello everyone!

I should like to draw attention to the following book publication:

THE CELTIC ENGLISHES, ed. by Hildegard L.C. Tristram, Heidelberg 1997: Carl
Winter Universitätsverlag, ISBN 3-8253-0377-2, ca $ 40

This collection of 14 essays plus a general introduction by the editor
offers a survey of the research done so far on the "Celtic Englishes", of
the methods used and of the results achieved. The "Celtic Englishes" under
study in this volume are the varieties of English spoken in Ireland, Wales,
Cornwall, Scotland, Man and Newfoundland, that is, those countries where
English came into contact with the respective native Celtic languages. The
collection as a whole bears ample witness to the fact that this field of
study has been seriously neglected.

The essays published arose from the papers given at the first Colloquium on
the "Celtic Englishes" in 1995 at the University of Potsdam (Germany). The
second Colloquium will take place 23 to 27 September 1998.
