  First Circular and Call for Papers.

The Forum for Research in the Languages of Scotland and Ulster is pleased to
announce that the eighth conference in this series will be held in July 2006.
For the first time since 1994, we have selected an island venue for the
conference: the Columba Centre in Islay.

Fittingly, a major theme of the conference will be the languages, history and
culture of Islay and the Inner Hebrides: scholars who have already accepted an
invitation to speak at the conference include Robert Ó Maolalaigh and George
Jones on aspects of the Gaelic of South Argyll, Donald Meek and Christopher
Whyte on the Islay poet William Livingstone, Margaret Storrie on Islay
place-names and Christopher Small on Orwell and Jura.  As always, however,
papers on any other aspect of the languages of Scotland and Ulster will be
welcome: Iseabail MacLeod will be speaking on Jamieson's Dictionary, April
MacMahon on her Scots phonetic similarity matrix and Andrew Noble on the
language of Scottish radical poets of the 1790s.

Offers of papers are cordially invited, and should be sent by Friday 21 October
2005, by e-mail or by post to the following address:

The conference programme will run from Wednesday 5 to Saturday 8 July, closing
with a ceilidh on the Saturday evening.  Delegates are encouraged to arrive
during Tuesday 4: an informal reception will be held that evening.  Please note
that there is no residential accommodation at the Columba Centre, and though
Islay abounds in hotels, guest-houses and self-catering establishments, July is
a popular month for visitors.  A list of hotels, etc., is available on request
to the chair; and delegates are strongly advised to start making their
arrangements in the near future.  The island's 
excellent bus service will ensure
that all delegates can easily reach the Centre.  The Conference will partly
coincide with Cantilena, Islay's famous music festival; and it is hoped that at
least one event on the social programme will take advantage of this.

Details regarding conference fees and the social programme will be announced in
future circulars, of which the next will be sent out in November 2005.

The Forum Committee looks forward to hearing from you, and to welcoming you to
