Dear List Members:

I hope someone can please help me with the following question...

In Irish there is 'achrann', whose primary
meaning seem to be 'thicket, undergrowth', but which also means
'entangled, firmly fixed' and 'strife, dissension'. I have thought
this word derives from a Celtic root similar to Latin acer (cf. Irish aicher), "sharp",
but am now wondering about a connection with crann, 'tree'.

There is, of course, Latin acernus for the maple tree. Could 'achrann' have originally denoted a (maple) thicket?

Thank you for any information you can offer.

Most sincere best wishes,

Daniel Hunt
