issue with compounds

Dear Shelley,
Compounds use pluses, as in french+fries and hot+dog. The underscore is for combinations that are NOT easily classed as compounds, such as helter_skelter, chips_ahoy, jack_in_the_box, etc. There are files like n-underscore.cut in the MOR that display this. To be honest, deciding whether or not to treat something as a compound is not that easy. However, if something is entered as a compound, then using the plus is not necessary. So, hotdog and hot+dog will yield the same output, but this is not true for helter_skelter.

My question is why did it say that MOR would not recognize the compounds such as 'french_fries'? We checked the manual and it appeared this was how to denote compound words, with the underscore between them. Did that rule change since November? I understand why other types of words are on the list below. thanks
