post code [+ bch]?

Hi Leonid and Susanne,

Thank you for your advice. I found out that the problem is the use of [+ bch] in the exclude file. If I tried –s”[+ bch]” instead of the exclude file (testexclude.cut), the main tier with [+ bch] was excluded as you can see below.

> MLU -s"testexclude" @
mlu -stestexclude @

mlu (03-Mar-2015) is conducting analyses on:
  ONLY dependent tiers matching: %MOR;
****************************************
>From file <c:\TALKBANK\CLAN\work\output\SP project\mlu.cha>
MLU for Speaker: *ROS:
MLU (xxx, yyy and www are EXCLUDED from the utterance and morpheme counts):
                Number of: utterances = 2, morphemes = 3
Ratio of morphemes over utterances = 1.500
                Standard deviation = 0.500

I have another question regarding an exclude file.
In order to calculate MLU following Roger Brown’s guideline, my lab is creating an exclude file. We check FREQ output of each MOR.PST.cex tanscript file to see whether real words such as yes, no, okay, etc. in co|, uni|, and on| categories and after fixing the misclassifications of uni| and on| categories, we include uni|* and on|* in the exclude file. We also list all items of co| category other than real words classified as co| category.
Yesterday I ran FREQ on %mor using the exclude file attached using the command:
FREQ +t%mor –t* -s”@spexclude.cut” +f file name
But the FREQ output
(2003freeplay.mor.pst.correct.frq0) contained uni| items even though the exclude file contained uni|*.

If we added the option –s“uni|*”, then uni| items were excluded (2003freeplay.mor.pst.correct.frq1).
Since other items in the exclude file were excluded from FREQ, I don’t understand why only uni|* doesn’t work. I attach the transcript I used for this analysis.
Did I do something wrong here?
Thank you in advance for your help.

Dear Yuriko,
maybe the missing quotations marks are the problem?
 (MLU +t%mor –t* -s[+ bch] *.cha).
->  MLU +t%mor –t* -s"[+ bch]" *.cha
please try.
Susanne

Yuriko,

I can't replicate the problem you are describing. I am attaching a very small sample file that I used for testing called "mlu.cha". And here is its content:

*ROS: alert [!] alert ! [+ bch]
%mor: adj|alert n|alert !
*ROS: yeah [= yes] .
%mor: co|yeah .

When I run a default MLU command "mlu mlu.cha" on this sample file, then I get the following output reporting two utterances found:

MLU for Speaker: *ROS:
MLU (xxx, yyy and www are EXCLUDED from the utterance and morpheme counts):
            Number of: utterances = 2, morphemes = 3
Ratio of morphemes over utterances = 1.500
            Standard deviation = 0.500
When I run MLU command that excludes utterances with "[+ bch]" postcode 'mlu -s"[+ bch]" mlu.cha', then I get output reporting that only one utterance is found as expected:

MLU for Speaker: *ROS:
MLU (xxx, yyy and www are EXCLUDED from the utterance and morpheme counts):
            Number of: utterances = 1, morphemes = 1
Ratio of morphemes over utterances = 1.000
            Standard deviation = N/A

Please try this sample file on your machine with above commands. If they do work correctly, then please email directly to me your sample file that fails to exclude utterances with "[+ bch]" postcodes. If above commands do not work on attached sample file on your computer, then I would suggest that you first try quitting CLAN and restarting it again and try those commands again. If it still doesn't work, then try rebooting your computer and for the last resort try to get latest version of CLAN and installing it on your computer. If everything still fails, then please let me know what version of OS you have on your computer and which version of CLAN you are using, so that I could try to replicate the problem.

Leonid.

Hi Brian,

We used to use [+ bch] to exclude utterances such as singing, reading, etc.
from MLU count (MLU +t%mor –t* -s[+ bch] *.cha). But this does not seem to work anymore. And if we add [+ bch] on % mor, CHECK complains.
Can’t we use [+ bch] anymore? If so, is there any CHAT convention we can use for this purpose?
