OS X screen control, escape-2

Dear ChiBolts,

I had been experiencing some problems with window size control recently and I was thinking that this could be a problem with the new CLANc program, which is now the only one I am using. However, after describing these problems to Leonid, I learned that the problems related to my own lack of understanding about how to control the editor window and the CLAN Output window in OS X in general. Some of these things have been around many years and I was just noticing them now. Here is what I learned:
1. If the open window has its bottom line at the bottom of your screen or up against the bottom dock, you will not be able to see the bottom lines. This will make it impossible to run things like Escape-2 for disambiguating after running MOR. To solve this, move the window up. If you window opens up in the problematic full position by default, just open up a new window in a better position and CLAN will remember your new position.
2. When there are long lines in the CLAN Output window, they tend to force the window over to the right. In order to get back to a nice alignment of the lines on the left, you might like to use the scroll bar at the bottom of the CLAN Output window. However, by default OS X sets the scroll bars to be only visible when you roll over them, which gets tricky. To always have access to the scroll bars, you have to go into System Preferences/General and select “Show scroll bars — always”. This is a more stable option.
3. When running disambiguation using escape-2, you need to have your cursor at the beginning of the file. If you place it after the last ambiguity, you will get a confusing message telling you “Done”. In fact escape-2 disambiguation is not done. It is just that you placed your cursor after the last ambiguity.

I’ve add these observations to the CLAN manual in section 4.4 on Window Positioning and the MOR manual for escape-2.

Best,

—Brian MacWhinney
