But there can always be further complications with things like this. Sometimes this is caused by the ways in which some other application has redefined some keys.</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">To get around the problem, you should be able to go the the Window menu item in the top-level options for CLAN and then pull down to "Special Characters". There you will see options for open quote and close quote in the last four lines of the list. If you double click on the line for close quote, it will insert that character into your text. From that point, you could use cut-and-paste to insert it as needed.</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">Best,</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">-- Brian MacWhinney<br class=""><div><blockquote type="cite" class=""><div class="">On Aug 13, 2018, at 2:46 PM, 'Cathy Lonngren' via chibolts <<a href="mailto:chibolts@googlegroups.com" class="">chibolts@googlegroups.com</a>> wrote:</div><br class="Apple-interchange-newline"><div class=""><div dir="ltr" class="">I am currently updating my CHAT transcripts (so they pass through CHECK). One of the changes involves the coding of short quotations (single words or a few words) within utterances. On p.67 of the manual it tells me to use F2 + ' to open a quote and then F2 + " to close a quote. Although the opening quote marks appear without a problem, the closing quote marks do not - instead the result is what looks like a comma. CHECK then identifies this as an error. I have tried several things on the keyboard but no success so far. I know the Unicode characters are U201C and U201D but using the ALT button doesn't appear to work either. The device I am on at the moment is a Windows 10 tablet with detachable keyboard (I am away travelling) so I don't know whether that is the problem.<div class="">Any help would be much appreciated. </div><div class="">Cathy</div></div><div class=""><br class="webkit-block-placeholder"></div>
