THE JOURNEY CONTINUES

On September 11, join the High Desert Museum in Bend as it celebrates
the grand opening of its Henry J. Casey Hall of Plateau Indians. The
culmination of a nine-year-long effort, the new 10,000-square-foot
wing will focus on various themes relating to the Nez Perce, Yakima,
Umatilla, and other tribes of the Columbia River Plateau.

To kick things oft, the museum presents "By Hand Through Memory,"
which traces the experience of 20th-century Plateau Indians--from
their relocation to reservations on into today's high-tech era--to
show how they've retained their cultural identity despite efforts to
assimilate them. Touching on aspects of political empowerment,
artistic expression, and stereotypes, the exhibit raises such
questions as "What role does spiritualism play today?" and "How does
the market economy impact tribes?"

Visitors can discover answers as they work their way through
different settings, like a sweat lodge or a tribal administrative
office, where they can view interactive displays, interpretive
panels, video presentations, and computer links. The exhibit also
provides an opportunity for the museum to showcase items-buckskin
dresses, beaded bags, jewelry, weapons-from the 7,000-plus artifacts
in its Doris Swayze Bounds Collection.
