LaXayEm, shiks!

Last night I started posting some Chinuk Wawa song
texts at the Mudcat Café (www.mudcat.org). I posted
"tumala shati" and the two versions of "wiski shati"
that were handed out at the lu7lu at PSU. I would like
to post as many other songs there as possible.

Another Mudcatter posted "Seattle Illahee"

There'll be mowitch and klootchman by the way
When we 'rive at Seattle Illahee
Row, boys, row, let's travel
To the place they call Seattle,
Seattle Illahee!

There'll be hiyu clams and klootchman by the way
Hiyu tenas moosum
Till daylight fades away
Row, boys, row, let's travel
To the place they call Seattle,
Seattle Illahee!

Kwonesum kwonesum cooley
Kopa nika illahee
Kunamokst kapswalla moosum as the daylight fades away.

Row, boys, row, let's travel
To the place they call Seattle,
That's the place to have a spree!
Seattle Illahee!

Of course, this is not CJ but English with CJ words
sprinkled through it, but it's an interesting example
of that macaronic genre. We are informed that it is
hoped Phil Thomas, who collected the text in 1959 in
BC, will be performing it next weekend at the
Northwest Folklife Festival in Seattle. Seattle-area
CJ folks may want to attend, eh?

Also, another poster, apparently a Chinook tribal
member living in Canada, pled with me to put her in
touch with a Chinook-speaker/theatre-person who can
help her revive and produce a story about Bluejay that
she received from her grandmother.

I hope Chris and Tony and Bobby and any of the rest of
you with an interest in the musical arts will visit
the thread (and if possible, suggest to Diana how to
get her dance produced). The thread URL is

http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=69992

and the Mudcat is that rarity in this day and age, a
forum where you don't have to join to post. Though
there are many advantages to joining it, if you like
to discuss/study folk music and allied subjects.
