meaning of "chuckanut"

Well, I've already heard back from that linguist. The meaning of Chuckanut
is thought to be something like "the beach or the tide goes way out". This
would be in the Nooksack Salish language.

Another linguist has suggested that it's from the neighbouring Northern
Straits Salish language--I wonder if that would mean Samish? In that case
the meaning would involve the concept of burning, but I'm not told
exactly. "Burnt beach" maybe?

The word is not from Chinook Jargon, anyway. Many thanks to Brent Galloway
for generously sharing his knowledge.
