Cross house

This might turn out not to be Jargon. Sorry if it does.

I'm trying to understand what looks like "kros haws" in a shorthand Jargon
letter. It's a detail in the story of an elder who died apparently while
kneeling in a bridge over a creek. So he died in the "cross house"?

Is this term known in English? Could it be purely Jargon, meaning
something like "crossing house"? Could this refer to a covered bridge?

Thanks for any help,
